HELP!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?! PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok guys, here the low down. My friend Ty wants to race me. He has a 71-73 Mustang Mach 1 with a 350 Automatic and he dosent know how to race so im gonna guess hes just gonna lay on the pedal not realizing that he wont get that good acceleration.

I on the other hand have a '86 camaro V6 2.8 Multi-port Injection but its manual and I know how to drive. So Im gonna go about 500 under redline before I shift. And i think its gonna be a down and back and i know how to drift pretty good so that will be a good advantage.

This is what me and my other friends have planned for my car to get it ready. Were going to remove the exhaust pipes up to the connecter under the passenger door, take out all seats except the driver seat, take out the spare tire and probaby the headliner to. I've already taken out the air conditioner, and im going to take off the hood (good 50 lbs weight reduction hood alone) and take off my z28 body kit.

Then we are going to clean all the spark plugs, run premium gas and octane booster, oil change, tranny fluid change, and add a diesel turbo (not the engine just the turbo and im only running it to like 5-6 psi to protect the car), and probably remove the air filter.

As soon as the race is over im going to put it all back together the way it was (except the turbo ill just turn it down). And im gonna wash it to to make it look good before we race. Ill try and take pics to post on race day after we race. I really want to beat him and get some respect from others for my car. Im sick and tired of everyone dissin the camaro and goin for the mustangs. We need my six to kill the v8 mach 1, we need to show people that no matter what a Chevy will always crush ford. Any pointers would be great! I want to be able to tell my son travis about this in a couple years when hes alittle older.

Thanks
Jake

Dans87GTA 12-07-2006 04:30 PM

ya sorry bro not to sound like a ******* but i dont think it have the engine to spool up a turbo of that size. go out and try and beat him if you dont who cares you have a V-6 and he has a V-8 (by the way ford doesnt make a 350) 351- is ford. if you really want to pride of everyone sell the 6 and save up and get a 8 and do a coulpe mods and blow the pants of the fored guys but just alittle piece of advise it take money, time and knowledge. and the first one IS the most important good luck Later Daniel:driving:

Dude, were you under the influence while typing this post?

nidyanazo 12-07-2006 07:19 PM

Come on dude, what are you thinking??? Do you know how to setup a forced induction fuel system? Do you know how to weld a hot side/cold side for a turbo?? Get real with yourself. Don't bother racing. And what is this "there and back" racing crap? "I can drift pretty good" DUDE. :idiot: You car won't EVER beat that car with a 2.8 under the hood. Get a new 350 and try again...

fmacon1992 12-07-2006 08:07 PM

let him have his fun...i remember when i was in my late teens, i'd stick a manfacturer's sticker on my window and swore i felt it added power on the butt dyno:rolleyes:

yeah im gonna get a high performance crankshaft but the whole point is that i think that a v6 chevy could take a v8 ford anyday. and i decided that i want to do it on a street race track (we have one right here in portland) so that will be a definate plus on my side because 1. i have a manual and i dont need the brake for cornering because i know how to drift pretty well he has a automatic and dosent know how to handle it so hell prolly step on the brakes and slow himself down on corners where as i would take them full spped (plus he has some crappy thin tires and mine are these huge beafy ones)

i talked to one of my friends (z28_master) and he has a 92 z28 350 with alot more performance then the ford and hes gonna let me practice with him so that i can get my car to at least trail him closely then ill for sure kill that ford.

thanks for the advise bro. much appreciated.

jake

Ibanez_Jake 12-08-2006 12:21 AM

For the rest of you, laugh it up guys. The first guy who posted was the only one that actually gave some good information. Like i said in replying in his post "My point is that a v6 chevy could beat a v8 ford anyday" and i noticed that one of you even has a ford. What is that?! Either get rid of your chevy (not recomended) or get rid of your ford (highly recomended) because that ford dosent deserve to be on the same parking lot let alone garage as a chevy.

ohh and please dont question my skills as an automechanic. i know my stuff. that would be why i work at a toyota dealership as a mechanic AT 17. so yeah. that has to count for something.

for all the hardcore chevy people, thank you for your support. and i will make sure to win this one for you all.

brodyscamaro 12-08-2006 12:34 AM

I don't really read posts with your level of ignorance on any other boards that I frequent...

Ibanez_Jake 12-08-2006 12:48 AM

come on man. this is a chevy pontiac board. you should have at least some pride in chevy or pontiac.

Dano 00TA 12-08-2006 02:38 AM

You racin' for money or just bragging rights? That's alot of work you're doing for no cash:confused:

91TAL98 12-08-2006 05:52 AM

GL, but I do not understand why you would do all that.....just to race a stang. Allot of money and allot of time to be spent on a V6. I understand what you are saying your point is about a V6 vs a V8, but in reality your modding the V6 just to beat the V8....thereofre it isn't a true V6 vs V8 race. Once you mod or start adding to an engine....no matter if it is V6 or not, you take away the aspect of it just being a V6 engine. For the amount of money and time you are putting into it, just drop a V-8 in it and be done. I mean by time you add the turbo, you will have to redo all the fuel set up and be able to properly be able to tune the car to accept the turbo.....there is allot more work to that than you are thinking. But if you know what you are doing and really want to do it your way, then good luck.

My bottom line advise is, swap the V6 for a V8.

Nic 12-08-2006 05:58 AM

Threads like this are what keeps me coming back to this site :lmao:

CrazyHawaiian 12-08-2006 06:22 AM

What I would do is buy a 300hp nitrous kit and a line lock, install the new parts and set up the nitrous for the 300 shot. Then before the race even begins I would hold the line lock and do the biggest burnout in the world to let the guy know you mean business. Don't worry about going 500 under redline before shifting, hold it at 7000. Then pop the nitrous shot right when the temp guage reads 240 and release the line lock.

Thats what I would do in your situation.

Nic 12-08-2006 07:58 AM

The worst part about this entire thread is that the kid is completely serious.

TexasSilhouette 12-08-2006 08:26 AM

I can't wait for the Speed TV special where the little V6 Camaro takes on the Top Fuel Fords to drive home his point that a v6 Chevy can take ANY v8 Ford any day. That would be an awesome race to watch for sure. the <200 HP V6 dominating the >5000 HP Top fueler.

z28z34man 12-08-2006 10:46 AM

if you want a gm v6 to beat that ford v8 maybe you should do the first third gen l67 swap it would probably be ezer than turboing your car.

in reality there is a stock v6 third gen that would destroy that, it is called a tta

FYI, drifting is not the fastest way around the track. If you are serious about beating him and are planning on a street race track? (I assume that's road course) you can beat him w/ much less horsepower. He'll have an advantage in the straights, you should have the advantage in the turns and under braking. Tires, that's really what you need most. Seeing as how money isn't a huge issue, buy a new set of shaved Kuhmo 710's.

And for the rest of you haterz... "I want to be able to tell my son travis about this in a couple years when hes alittle older." That pretty much says it all.

0uTcast13 12-08-2006 11:46 AM

man OK the mustang dose not have a 350 in it. it s a 351 or a 302 and any of those ford motors will beat the **** out of u really easy. u think your v6 can hang with a ford v8 bring it any time there are fast fords out there and i respect those and chevys to that what makes racing fun a 305 vs a 302 but a v6 vs a v8 what is that i would not even waste my gas if i was your buddy. :idiot:

IMO you better add more PSI. Im all about Chevys and I have a v6, but I wouldnt put money on this...

Dans87GTA 12-08-2006 12:17 PM

I agree with everyone to. i really dont think that anyone is bashing this kid because he asked for everyone opinion and they are giving it to him. dont want to hear what ppl have to say dont ask! Hey man if your so serious and your a 17 year old mechanic at toyota dealership then go for it. best of luck to you. but one question if your love GM's so much why are you at a toyota dealership? Later Daniel

Nic 12-08-2006 12:56 PM

Do lube tech's really count as mechanics? :idiot: My 13 year old cousin knows how to change oil, man, she could do your job :lmao:

TexasSilhouette 12-08-2006 01:21 PM

You might be able to take him, you would have to drop all the drifting nonsense as that is not racing, it's more like dancing but with a car and it is NOT the fastest way around a corner.
Bolt on a Nitous Oxide system (N2O Rocks!) to give you a chance in the straight away and use your (more) moden chassis to out turn his antique.
Put some decent tires on with some urethane bushings, stiff springs and fat sway bars.

Then find a course that does not get straight for more than 100 feet or so to prevent his hp/torque advantage from passing you.

Learn how to drive.

maybe then..

maybe.

Nate86 12-08-2006 01:58 PM

Sounds like you're going to ruin a perfectly drivable car to lose a race with a Mustang. Go Chevy pride! :idiot:

Rossi 12-08-2006 02:27 PM

LOL

dennisbernal91z 12-08-2006 02:30 PM

OK, In all hoesty I remember being 17 and having my 91 Z28 and thinking stuff like that. I am now 22 (23 in 2 days) and have the same 91 Z28, but now it has a 500 HP 385, a T-56 and moser 12 bolt with a 250 shot of N20. Now it is going to be fast.

I understand that you have a V6 and you wanna beat this guy. That is not stupid that you wanna do that. I stand behind you. Try your best, but please please learn more about racing and how to be taken seriously. Here are my main concerns.

1. Why take off your GFX, they weigh maybe 5-10lbs MAX. That is not gonna win a race and they are a pain in the *** to get back on there. If you think it is easy it is cuz you have never done it before.

2. Did you honestly say you are gonna pull your headliner. It is def less that 3 lbs, and will def get ruined with you try to pull it out. Just wait and see.

3. DRIFTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG THIS MADE ME LOOSE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW CAN YOU BE THIS RETARTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is by no means a fast way around a corner!!! OMG, oook ok ok ok .....

I am calming down. WOW..... ok ok.

If you didn't allready know, drifting is a very slow and retarted way to go around a bend, even the pro drifters on TV say "this is not about getting around first, it is about style"
That means he is not trying to get around as fast as possible!!!!!!

4. Do you have any idea whatsoever what it takes to put a turbo in a car? How much $ do you have to spend on this set up? It cost a lot, you need headers, fuel lines, intake pipes, and downtubes and so on.. Can you are least weld?!!?

5. Your V6 is slow. So what?! This doens't mean you suck. It just means you own a V6, thats it. If you make you car handle better, you will have a fighting chance. Get some N20 and learn how to use it.

After that good luck man. If you are really this lost (as your post make you sound) PM me and will be happy to talk you though any set of upgrades you might be looking to do. I love crazy chevy pride, but not when you have so little tech skill behind it.

Please open your eyes

Thank you man. that means alot to know that someone notices that im not doing it just for bragging rights and to get people to quit dissin on chevy. My son and wife both have alot to do with it. I dont have money for Kuhmo tires but i do have beefy tires that do some amazing cornering. I havent found many cars that can beat me corner wise.

also i found out that his car is really light back end wise so hes just gonna burn rubber for a minute because he dosent know how to fether the gas off the start in an automatic. but thanks agian man. its always nice to have someone ruitting for you.

Ibanez_Jake 12-08-2006 02:59 PM

Ok, im getting sway bars and strut bars and a plexi-glass hood. also a high performance crankshaft so that i can boost up the turbo a bit more.

track layout (if we do that track) from the start its a small straitaway (probably going to roast his tires because that car is really light in the back and he dosent know how to drive) the right there theres a 90 one way and a 130 the other. hes gonna have to slow down a bunch alot less then i will and he cant ride the corner like i can. he has crappy handling. then a series of wider corners but not wide enough for him to really romp on it. as long as i keep my car under control on the outside of the small strait aways and tight to the insides of the corners i might be able to get alittle ahead of him before the last corner (another 90 i think) and then the 1/8 mile. (turbo and nos would be nice. but i have no money for nos. the turbo im getting free. and yes i know how to weld will you all please lay off of me.)

and i work at toyota because the chevy dealership had no openings. trust me. i tried and tried again and toyotas are good cars to. and i might only be a lube tech but they give me plenty of mechanic work. so please lay off my job to.

alot of you are missing my point. your to busy laughing at me to even see this. im so tired of people laughin at chevy because people like some of you (not all because i see a few hardcore chevy/pontiac fanatics) dont have faith in your chevy or pontiac. i love my car and it definatly deserves a chance to show people what it has.

if i lose then, he has a good car. (i do admit that mustang is a different breed and they are nice, but will never be as nice as a chevy) but if i win, not only do i get bragging rights, and good comments about my car instead of people laughing at me because i have a chevy, but also my son will beg me and beg me to borrow my car for senior prom or anything else just because he knows its got power and he loves driving it. i have pride in my car and i think that she has a chance, and when she gets a chance she needs to take it.

yet again, people that are actually giving me advise and not just laughing at me and my car, thank you.

jake

dennisbernal91z 12-08-2006 03:20 PM

Thats fine. I don't want to laph at you, I want to help you win. Are you getting thise "stronger crank" free too? Cuz it takes a lot of work to put jsut a new crank in. What about your rods, if they are the weekest link, not even the strongest crank in the world can help you there. What about pistons? These are things that all need to be considred. Also what about extra fuel, how are you gonna adress that issue? Just trying to help man, once you say you are gonna keep it tight in the turns and stuff you acctally sound like you might get somewhere and beat this guy...
----------
One last thing, there is no such thing as a plexi glass hood? What is that?

And what is a strut bar?

Again... this kinda wierdo stuff is what makes you sound like you have no idea what you are talking about.

brodyscamaro 12-08-2006 03:25 PM

You need help dude, and not from TGO...

GMan 3MT 12-08-2006 03:46 PM

Get one of these too *LINK*

Nic 12-08-2006 03:56 PM

omg this thread keeps getting better and better! :lmao:

z28z34man 12-08-2006 04:17 PM

the thing is even if the diesel turbos are free the pipeing and other stuff will cost more than a nitrous set up and the diesel turbos will never spool up in your 2.6

if you must turbo go with an eclipse turbo or if you strike gold 3kgt twin setup might be nice (there small so they will spool up quick and you are not looking to push 20 lbs so you wont max them out)

grimmcs 12-08-2006 04:26 PM

Not bashin you or anything, but you have the money to buy a crank, and fab up a turbo kit, but you cant afford some NOS?
Not sayin' you shouldnt do it or that youll lose. You think you can beat him, go for it...

ScottyRS 12-08-2006 05:41 PM

After reading this thread, it is becoming increasingly apparent that you may not know as much about cars (particularly yours) as you think.

lilbowilson 12-08-2006 06:26 PM

Ok I've finally stop laughing at you so here's my 2 cents. I can see you have no idea of how much money you have to spend for a decent turbo setup. A stock V6 just can't handle a turbo it needs more than just a good crankshaft.

The money that it cost to build a V6 for a turbo you could build a very fast and streetable V8. With just Vortec heads, cam, good carb and a stock bottom end you can make over 400hp easy for about $2000. Now thats affordable HP more than your young A$$ can handle I'm sure.

If you want a turbo go to college learn more about it get a good job so you can support your family first then if you have enough for this hobby then go for it. Until then go the cheaper route V8!

Frozer!!! 12-08-2006 07:34 PM

brandoz28 12-08-2006 08:04 PM

i hope you can drive as well as you think you can, and, the course might help you, but the turbo thing still has my brain spinning backwards, i'm sorry, even if you can weld, its just too big, the 2.8 will have problems spooling it. Now, you have to worry about tuning it, making sure that its getting the additional fuel, and not too much timing. This is all assuming there isnt too much compression in the motor. good luck man. i still vote to step up to the v8, the v6 is weak, and likes to explode. And on a start with an auto, you dont feather, you roll, the gas pedal isnt an on/off switch. i'd say if its been stripped, leave it as such, dont do anything to the motor but a good tuneup, and then go ahead and try to outdrive him. o yeah, make sure you matched the sway bar setup front to rear, the strut tower bar is the least of your worries right now. sorry that this post is kinda all over, but hope it works out well for you.

WaaX 12-09-2006 12:54 AM

I think I just pooped a little from laughing so hard.

Seriously.. youre going to be very dissapointed when you either A) Blow your engine up or B) loose.

Those are your ONLY two possibilities.

If you do suceed and do beat him, we wont believe you unless you have a video.

I need to go change my boxers now, thanks.

Zyth01 12-09-2006 02:14 AM

Four steps to success:

1. Go back to high school.

2. If not going back to school, get a job and support your family.

3. Your car being a Chevy and his being a Ford doesn't mean jack, if thats how it worked, then everyone would own a Chevy.

4. You should copy/paste everything in this thread and go back and read it in a couple of years, hopefully you'll see the error in your ways.

1991CamaroRslow 12-09-2006 02:25 AM

WOW... they should start a new show on speed channel called GIMPS instead of PINKS for people like this. Sorry man I'de like to in some way add something meaningful to this thread or... believe you but really I read the thing twice and I have no idea what's going on, good luck drifting around out there, just make sure no one mistakes your gutted open hood car for an import that would be worse than losing to a Ford wouldn't it?
