Slicks for races from a dig, street radials for roll races, skinny front tires!

Nic 02-26-2007 09:05 AM

If you want a radial, by far and away the MT ET radial or the new Hoosier radial. I have a stock suspension on my hatch and it'll still lift the fronts with a 26" ET radial.

IROCThe5.7L 02-26-2007 09:46 AM

Nitto drag radials would be good on the street, and last a decent time. BFG drag radials will hook a little better, but not last as long. There are 450 hp cobras around here running Nittos and they don't complain.

Orr89RocZ 02-26-2007 10:16 AM

i woudl say a drag radial of some sort. that way you get somewhat sticky traction if you race from a dig, but maintain stiff sidewall for roll races and for better top end speed performance compared to a wrinkle wall DOT slick.

87LS 02-26-2007 12:40 PM

It depends if you want to trun while your racing...

DR are the way to go for traction thats for sure
But if you want to make some sharp turns....not so good

I've talked to some guys that autocross and they said they really didn't see a big difference when having radials in the back.

1991CamaroRslow 02-26-2007 03:23 PM

If you race from rolls and your car isn't extremely powerful just stick with your stock tires. If you race from a dig go straght for ET Streets. Don't try driving like a madman on them but if you put 30psi in them they'll ride around pretty decently. Take them down to 10 or so when you want to race and you'll hook like mad.

87LS 02-27-2007 10:39 AM

I agree with the post above...
If you keep a ton of pressure in them then they are ok...
If you want to drag, and have them flex...and lower the pressure in them to maximize your launch they are wobbly....when you turn..
the sidewall flexes...which is great for launching but scary when turning at high speeds...
Just my .02 on it...

89ROCDROPTOP 02-28-2007 03:26 PM

The MT DR's work just as well as ET streets, and they are still a radial tire. I run them on my TR. You dont have to drop the DR's to 10 psi either, you'd get good traction with @18-20psi.

1991CamaroRslow 02-28-2007 05:26 PM

That's not even close to correct, the MT radials will work if you're running 13's, up the power from there and you run into issues. I don't see any point in having the ET radials, they wear out just about as quick as the Streets, but don't hook as well. I say go straight for the ET Streets and throw them on a spare set of rims. Then you can drive around on your street tires and stick the ET Streets on when you race. Also note that if you're using a manual you really don't want the raidals, you want the squishy sidewall to take up the shock.

Its obvious you dont use them to know. I run 11.68 with the DR's without a problem on traction @18psi., at the same time they are very stable on the street. Drag radials have come a long way from the BFG's.

1991CamaroRslow 02-28-2007 05:41 PM

I've watched the MT raidals absolutly BOIL behind an 11 second car. Glad you're having luck with them, I haven't seen them work out well. MT even warns against running them on a manual car. I suppose they would be decent for street racing but from what I've seen of them I wasn't impressed. The car I saw these used on was a 1980's Cutlas with a mild 454 in it. Swapped the radials off for a set of MT ET Drags and it hooked. Funny thing is the ET drags were shorter and skinnier. I know this is kind of comparing apples to oranges but it's not an uneducated assumption that the radials won't perform like the ET Streets.

89ROCDROPTOP 02-28-2007 05:48 PM

I know I use them on my TR(mid11's),and 3 others I know use them,GN(mid10's),89 mustang(mid11's),88 mustang(low11's). All of us are happy with them with no traction issues. The 2 mustangs were using ET's before they switched, and said they preferred the DR's(one of them is a manual). Those are my experiences with them. Everyone has different tastes

Yep, I'd definitely say the MT radials hook...

25thmustang 02-28-2007 08:05 PM

In most cases I have seen the MT radials bog cars down. On an auto they hook damn hard, and even on stick shift cars they hook well...

Also Im not talking 13 second cars, Im talking 11 second or better cars!

There was a guy recently in a stick shifted, 18" drag radialed, all motor, 347 SN95 Mustang that hooked to a 1.48 60'! DRs will hook, and will hook hard!

1991CamaroRslow 02-28-2007 11:39 PM

1.48 is impressive, how much did the car weigh?

1991CamaroRslow 02-28-2007 11:44 PM

Actually judging by the post alot of people are having good luck with these. Not to sound stupid but what is a TR? Mustangs are light, GN's don't produce a ton of shock off the line (unless trans brake equipped) but if these guys are comparing them directly to ET Streets it makes me curious as to what was up with the set I saw ran.

3400 I believe, car also went high 10s...

An auto wont shock the tires like a stick, even off a brake. This is why I rarely look at advice from auto guys when looking for tires, two different animals!

1991CamaroRslow 03-01-2007 01:50 AM

3400's heavier than my car and I have to agree there's nothing like the kinetic energy of a rev limit clutch dump. I just told a friend with a 460 swap in a Mustang to rid himself of his pair, I'll tell him to keep them and give them a try before he does. I don't claim to be an expert on them but I didn't expect them to get this positive of a review from what I've seen. I can post results when I see what they do at the track but that'll be a while.

5678TA 03-01-2007 02:28 AM

i would say et radials for street and DOT slicks for strip.. radials because they can take turns.. i wouldnt want to turn on a DOT slick at high speed..

Nic 03-01-2007 07:23 AM

If I had to guess, I'd say the car you saw blaze the radials had way too much air in the tires. The coupe I posted was running his at 12 psi and had nothing more than a set of SSM lowers. That was a 1.49 60' in that picture. I run the silver one in my sig at 12 psi also and it will lift both fronts about 2" off the ground and consistently cuts high 1.7's. That's with factory control arms and all. I just ordered my second set the other day. If you take a look around the local strip on a street night, pretty much all the cars out there are running the ET radials.

1991CamaroRslow 03-01-2007 01:01 PM

I talked to him today and he was running them at 10psi, he thinks the issue was they were to wide for his rims. As of last year I didn't see a single pair of these tires at Edgewater, then again I didn't see many ET streets either. People there usually run street tires, Nitto radials, or go straight for full slicks.

Nic 03-01-2007 02:53 PM

Where is that at? I can't remember the last time I saw a Nitto. It's probably been at least 2 - 3 years...

TR is a turbo regal, I have a t-type. I dont know what psi the other guys are running, but I ran mine at 18#. I do have to admit the track was nicely prepped or I may have had to drop the pressure, although I haven't ran with less than 15#.

Orr89RocZ 03-01-2007 04:33 PM

i run my ET streets DOT slicks at around 18psi warm and they dead hook. 1.74 60 foot so far on a exhaust only L98. i have more in it i thinks

intex1982 03-01-2007 04:53 PM

i got me some mt et street they really hook up
