289 Mustang VS 305 GTA?

Ok heres the match. My dad has a '67 Mustang 289 2bbl and 4-speed. According to his Mustang book, factory HP rating is 200. And is ~2800 LBS or less (gotta check this again) My car: '88 GTA 305 auto, only missing the power adjustable seats option. Airfoil, Hyper Tech chip, flowmaster, gutted cat, 160* thermo and its droped 2" if that makes any difference. From what I've seen my GTA's HP rating is either 190 or 215 stock, plus whatever the mods give me. This race is almost guaranteed to happen this summer (provided we get lined up at least once at the track) and I really want to beat him, mainly just for the satisfaction of blowing away the almighty Stang in front of my brother (who is very hard core Mustangs are the best there ever was, ever will be, GM sucks etc... Just ask Demon Z28 or AmorgetRS they can vouch for it) My brother also seems to think my only advantage is the chip because I'm an auto, and heavier than the Mustang... So anyone no what I should expect the classic 'Stang to run? Am I gonna need a great launch to win or what? Also I've been to the track once (in my V6 5-speed 'Bird) I don't think he's ever been to the strip before.

Thanks in advance.

Jess

The 289 is a nice fast reving small engine.
Dont be supprised if its a close race.
A general factor to consider, auto vrs standard. You will have the advantage of a cleaner more positive launch but past the 30ft mark your father will have the advantage. Im sure you will win the race but it will be close.
GL post your race results if it happens.

Well hello there fellow 305/auto GTA. You have every mod i've done, so get your car tuned up right and I wouldnt be surprised to see a near identical time as mine. also, shift the tranny manually. make the shifts around 5100 rpms. and make sure to get the tires nice and warm, but dont overdo it in the burnout box. a huge burnout on radials will make little balls of rubber on the tire and they will hinder the launch just like little ball bearings under your wheels https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/smile.gif so yeah, it'll be a close race, but have a little confidence in your 305, they're worthy engines when they're running good.

I think you have a good chance of takeing him,But it might be close.there's this knuckle-head where i work that has one and he was always telling me that his car was so fast, etc, etc,Anyway,I'm leaving work one night and i see him comeing up in the left lane (his car is a late-60s mustang with the 289 w/edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carb),He hung with me a little bit until my car hit second,Then after that it was pretty much over.I know i have way more mods then you,And my car is a little lighter(base firebird),But i still think you'll win.

I think it'll be closer than you think. All the horsepwer ratings from the 60's and 70's are gross ratings-no accessories-no smog equipment hooked up for dyno test. Your rating is most likely a net rating. Plus you have a few good mods in your favor. In my opinion, you've got him.

Sorry i know this post is kinda old but i couldn't resist, my best friend owns a '65 mustang fastback 289, with Edelbrock Performer and Holley 4bbl with a flowmaster exhaust. I have an 87 SC with 305 4bbl, with 3.73 gears and a flowmaster exhaust with no cat. My car was definately quicker off the line but he started to catch at about 3rd gear but not nearly enough to get past my bumper. Once we got up to 100 mph we stopped, the point is it will be a close race, but you will have him i'm sure of it.

The big diff. between the other cars mentioned and his dad's are the carb. His dad's car is a 2 bbl. I think you will beat him. Has this race happened or what?

yea those 2bbl carbs are really nothing, and im pretty sure with a 200hp rating that thing wont do too much of a burnout so watchout off the line. should be pretty close.

From what I understand, you don't do burnouts with regular street tires. They just get all greasy, all you need to do is burp the throttle to clean whatever crap is on the tire. Drag radials are a bit different though, 2 or 3 seconds is good.
