3000GT VR4 something to mess with?

Ok, I am absolutely positive that a VR4 would kick my a$$(i have the L03), but my friend has a newer 1998 Trans Am. The trans am is stock, but the 3000GT has stage 1 mods(i think thats the turbo timer, and some other blow off valve)

Who would win this one? I think it'd be close, even though the 3000GTs are heavy(they still have 320 hp/315 torque).

Hey, if he lses, at least it was to a respectable car, they hate mustangs and hondas too. That qualifies them to be ok with me.

Thanks all

When my bother's car was close to stock (99 SS Camaro) he raced one on the highway, which is where those turbos should help out the most, and he said he had to let off several times to keep from rear-ending him. I doubt the VR4 would be able to catch a LS1 through the quarter as long as they have the same driving skills. The only one around here that races runs high 13's with probably the same mods. I don't think he is the best driver, though. I do know that if you don't launch at above 4500 rpms in those you will melt the clutch b/c of the All Wheel Drive set up. I think it would take a perfect launch to beat a LS1.

As much as I hate to say this I'd put my money on the VR4 they're quick and they hook..the camaro's and trans am's are quick but they don't have that AWD advantage. Those vr4's are not cars to be taken lightly..

There's a guy around town here that has his in the 12's with some bolt ons, I'm not sure how much money he put into it.

That AWD is bloody heavy! His car weighs almost 4100 lbs, with him in it.

I'd say it would be a close race, let us know what happens!

PullmeoverRed 10-04-2001 10:32 PM

Oh man, I just got back from my friends house, and both car owners were there. They were drinking, so they arent gonna do the race tonight, but I threw some fuel into the fire and I took them both for a test drive. Holy crap that was the most fun I've ever had, driving both of those dreams. Its a totally different feel being in a 3000gt after being ina camaro for 2 years. But the trans am was quick as lightning. Sadly to say, the VR4 seemed a little faster to me.

I set my watch and timed me getting from two points, the trans got there in like 7 seconds, the vr4 was there in like 6, so I cant wait to be in the race.

These guys are gonna have to battle it out. Screw the mustang vs. camaro rivalry, this one is gonna be even closer.

twiztidz28 10-05-2001 09:35 AM

I have to agree that the VR4 will walk all over a camaro from a stop to about 90 or 100. My friend has a 99 z28 it a couple of bolt ons. He raced a 95 VR4 with jsut air mods no other turbo stuff or anything. From a dead stop to 80 the VR$ had him. On the highway cause of the AWD the car wasnt as fast. my friend took the vr4 from a roll. Needless to say it would be a good race and up to the driver if its from a roll.

its all gonna depend on who car hook better. Its all gonna depend on who is the better driver as well. It will be close.

hehe the vr4 will always hook..no such thing as too much wheel spin with AWD..

Nitrous Al 10-05-2001 04:05 PM

The VR4 with mods will pull away from the Trans Am. The Trans Am is capable of running 13.0 et's, but the VR4 with AWD will beat it off the line. He'll rev it up, drop the clutch and little to none tire smoke. I hope the Trans Am driver can drive.

PullmeoverRed 10-05-2001 07:22 PM

Well, i guess we'll find out tonight. I gotta go back to school on sunday night, and I'll be damned if I dont see this. Maybe i'll enter my L03 into the mix........ Yea right. Well, I'll let ya know the results. It's 6:18 now, and the race is scheduled for 9:00. I'll let ya know the results. I think the length of the race is a mile or so. Its gonna be hot.

I watched a guy run a 13.88 sec 1/4 mile in a '95 3000 GT VR-4. He told me it was stock.

PullmeoverRed 10-07-2001 12:46 PM

Holy sh!t that was cool. Sorry to keep you waiting, my computer went down for two days. But anyway..

Both cars pulled and hooked extremely well, I think the VR4 was just a nose ahead off the line. Once they reached about 100mph(VR4 got ther first), he was about 1.5 car lengths ahead. As they approached the finish line, the VR4 won by only a car length, so if it was longer race, the trans could've had em. Who wouldve known that that heavy *** car could beat a trans am. Good race though, nobody got hurt.

P.S. I'm gonna convince them to try again....Maybe let me drive..

Nitrous Al 10-07-2001 01:21 PM

I told you the VR-4 would win!

PullmeoverRed 10-07-2001 02:53 PM

Yea, much is to be said for that 6 speed and the AWD. That six speed really makes that car move. I really want to drive it again, I need to figure it out, its so much different.

Now that the race is over, the owner of the VR4 is going for bigger fish. Now he wants to race a 2001 Audi A4. What the hell is that all about? My girlfriends dad has one, and it's fast as hell, but seriously, a family car vs. twin turbo sports car? The Trans Am wants to race it too, in hopes of redeeming himself from the vr4 race.

What do you guys think about that?

I think you dont know what fast is there Dave https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/wink.gif. A4's, even with the optioned 1.8T is not very quick. Also, earlier this year my friend ran a best of 16.9 with a 2.8 5 speed.

PullmeoverRed 10-09-2001 11:44 AM

Well, maybe he has it modified? It seems a lot faster than my L03, a hell of a lot faster. But maybe it's cuz it's a five speed. I don't really care, I won't race him anyway. I'll tell him to shut his mouth next time he tels me its fast, thats all.

I think the TA owner just needs to put a couple of mods on it, to kill that VR4. Heck full exhaust should do the trick.

He probably drives an Audi S4 instead of an A4. The S4 IS fast.

Well, I did find this out..

the trans am owner had full exhaust and ram air, he didn't know what hp he was at.

the vr4 had the stage 1 mods done, which put him up to about 370-380 hp.

So, it's not like either car was slow, but I still think it's because the trans am burned the tires before he launched. The vr4 stuck to the ground right away and blew him off the line.

Either way, I wanna see it again, it was real cool.

I think you'll find it's the 385bhp RS4. An estate car that is by all accounts stupidly fast. It's Audi's comprehensive answer to the new M3 and yes it's 4WD.

The S4 is very quick too, but not a patch on the new RS4... Be ware of Audi estate cars!! They look subtle with a grill in front of the front wheels on the fenders, apart from that even the RS4 badging is subtle!!

Shadowfax 10-17-2001 01:18 AM

Hey guys... I am a member of 3/Si.org and been there a while...

I'll tell you anything you wanna know... you guys are a decent bunch and have a better view of things than some boards.

I am the same guy on most any board people can visit (Shadowfax) although some of the earlier sites still show me as TwinTurboRT (LS1.com, newcelica.org are two I recall).

Feel free to ask me anything about 3000GT's and the Stealth.

a few things to know- The VR4 and the Stealth R/T TwinTurbo are identical in most aspects... little things are all that is different.
The TT does weigh in around 3800lbs as a 1st gen, the 2nd gens vary... the VR4 is around 3700, while the Stealth got down to around 3600.
The non turbos are typically 222HP and fwd. They only weigh about 3200-3400 lbs.

The 99 VR4's did have a huge nearly ***** wing on them stock- but it grows on you.

Stock the 1st gen TT runs 13.9-13.5 with a driver that can launch- I've seen much worse)the 2nd gen runs 13.7-13.4 (a small boost difference and a 6spd).

BPU (basic performance upgrades - borrowed term from the Supras - means intake (K&N), Exhaust (downpipe and catback) and Boost (manual controller or electronic)) normally puts them around equal terms and 13.2's to 12.7's (people are still pushing them harder- perhaps we'll see a lot lower).

I am one of the crazy people pushing the stock too small turbos as far as they go- I should hit 400AWHP and 11's... I haven't dyno'd or ran it quite yet (just got it finished and I dunno if the 125,000mile stock motor is gonna make it https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/smile.gif ) but the stock turbos only flow 235CFM each... way too small!!! Larger turbos are capable of a lot more - here's a little taste http://www.dynamicracing.com/racing_...009@128.75.mpg
remember that this is a motor with cam gears and stock otherwise internally (cams, valves, springs, pistons, crank, rods, oil pump, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds) with big turbos, and electronics, exhaust, tranny, etc... and under a 100shot of giggles...

the motor did go the next run... but the car was pushing close to 700flywheel HP. Not bad.

anyway... good luck and have fun... I'll stop in sometimes- feel free to stop in at www.3si.org and visit our forums... mostly the general forum- we are pretty decent... and I don't think we rag too bad on f bods https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/smile.gif
