02 SVT Stang rearview mirror ornament

Finally got my 383 in and found a first race. The guy in the stang was in his early to mid thirties and I figured he wouldn't race, but when we got to the stop light he started revving, when it turned green I launched a full car length ahead and was leaving him consistently. I let off around 60 and he pulled up beside me with a dumbfounded look on his face, I laughed all the way home. Anyway I wonder what kind of numbers you fellas think this engine makes. 383 with 9.7 to 1 compression on 91 octane, cast iron heads that are ported, GM hot cam and 1.6 aluminum roller rockers, Holley street dominator intake claims idle to 6500 capability. Right now I have a 600 cfm edelbrock carb which I know should be ditched for a 750, but money got tight. So what do you think?

duke_mushroom 11-19-2001 08:40 AM

Hey, sounds pretty nice, I'm no good w/ numbers though. BTW, where is Kingfisher, I've heard of it but don't know where it is. I'm in Broken Arrow, I'd like to build my own 383, so maybe you could give me some tips on how you did it.

You are probably running around 13.0. Those 2002 SVT's are supposed to run very low 13's.

Kingfisher is about 45 miles northwest of OKC, if you want all of the details on my engine just ask. Basically all of the money went into the stroker kit and the GM hotcam.

I really think that those cobras are way way over rated I run mid 13's and I have yet to get beat by a stock cobra even the older ones slightly modded (gears, h pipe ect.) can't keep up. If they really run that than I hook up on the street a whole lot better

Nic 11-19-2001 08:41 PM

The newer ('99 & '01) Cobra's don't hook for **** and are very tricky to launch with the IRS. There's been a lot of reports of 13.30's - 13.40's, but I'm sure just as many or more have been having trouble getting out of the 14's. It takes a really really good driver to see their potential. The older DOHC Cobra's run pretty well with the right gear in them, but most people chicken out at 3.73 or 4.10...they really need a 4.30...you'll probably see most of the lightly modded 96-98 Cobra's running in the high 13 second range. 94-95 Cobra's...if you're running mid 13's don't waste your gas...they're not worthy if they're close to stock.

I have to admit that I wasn't extremely impressed with his stang, but my question is how much hp/tq do you think I am making with this combo. Guesses?, experience? All comments are welcome.

Diabolical 11-20-2001 12:36 AM

350-400? haha i have absolutely no idea, maybe i'm close?

cort351w 11-20-2001 03:02 PM

Hey nic, aren't the 2002 cobras supposed to do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds? That's (ugly) corvette competition. Oh wait, no! The corvette has a lot more going for it than just straight line performance.

Not to rag on the vette, but I like the Z06 A LOT better. My dad got the 01 vettte coupe earlier this year. Two months later he traded it in for the Z06. There is a big difference. I don't know about the regular vetter, but the Z06 comes stock with adjustable coil-overs! It sounds weird, though. You can tell it's a V8 because of how the exhaust changes. I don't know how to describe it, but you all know what I mean--4 cylinders are very monotonic, a V6 doesn't make noise, straight 6 is not as offensive and can actually gurgle to some degree. Maybe that's it--the unique V8 gurgle sound. Anyway, there is no mistaking the type of engine, but at the same time it is very atypically (it's a word) high-pitched. However, when you get on it, it absolutely roars. Other than sound and ride (a lot firmer, a lot better) there's the 1.0 lateral g's of the Z06, the incredible flatness with which it corners, and the brakes. 60-0 in 106ft(says motor trend)! Until you get used to those brakes, you are almost dangerous to cars behind you; it's really incredible.

Man, I really got off topic with this one. I don't know even know what I'm replying anymore.

Beats me, I couldn't quote a 0-60 time of anything on the street? All I know is the IRS Cobra's are quick if the driver knows how to drive but are hard as hell to launch if you don't have much practice.

Mustang5L5 11-20-2001 05:28 PM

I may be nitpicking, but the 2002 Cobra doesn't come out til March or around then. If it's a new SVT then it's a 2001.

There have been people putting down 13.3-13.5 @ about 103MPh with them but that's with a good driver and with a perfect launch. For the most part most people will probablky manage low 14's/high 13's if they are lucky.

MM&FF got a CONVERTIBLE Cobra to run a 13.4 @ 103MPH (they also got a '02 SS to run 12.9)
