what gears should I get?

I'm thinking about getting some 3.55 gears but I'm still iffy about what to get, I'm trying to get some info on what gears can get me the most out of my engine from the line. Give me some inside guys :)

Welcome. You first. What is the primary use for your car? Daily driver, weekender, drag, road course?

More of a weekend car for occasional little fun if you know what I mean lol. Really interested in getting the most from the jump, a gear ratio that'll get my car up and going.

I am in the same camp. I went with 3.42's. They're just right. Can break the rear loose on 1-2 pretty easy and freeway is just fine. Turned out my posi was still good so I'm set. I also did the corvette servo upgrade.

Re: what gears should I get?

Best thing to do is put some numbers together I did a search and got equations to calculate rpm based on road speed, tire diameter, differential ratio. I used this to see what rpm my cruise speed both in town in 3rd and on the highway in top gear would be. You can then decide how much to give up for acceleration purposes depending on the use of your car. For instance I use a 285/35-18 tire 4.10 rear diff and in 5th gear at 70mph will turn almost 2900 rpm. Not very quiet or fuel efficient.

4.10s are pretty steep.

Re: what gears should I get?

I run a 408ci chev with vortec heads and a 770 holley and i ran with 255/60/15 tires because of wheel spin and i ran 3.08 diff and ran a 13.8 @ 100.01 mph 1/4 with wheelspin.

i went to a 3.4 diff and ran 14.6 @95mph the car felt faster but was slower and crossed the line at 6000rpm reving the crap out of the motor and going slower..,,,the 400chev runs out of puff at 5500 and thats where i should be,, take your car to a drag strip and get a time to work on,,,,get the thing on a dyno to see where your power runs out and thats about where you want to be on gearchanges and at end of 1/4..,,3.08 is a good daily driver or a larger torque motor like a 400.
your tires play a big part in what your gears will be driving
