Now I remember why we sold the IROC

Cruising down the highway after dinner, and we see this IROC weaving in and out of traffic. We came up to a stop light, and we were in the opposite lane, and just happened to get beside this beast of a Camaro.
He kept revving it, and nudging forward. The light turned green, and he took off, like he was all that. We got rolling, and eventually caught up to him again because of traffic. He wasn't able to bob and weave.
Our lane creeped forward of his, and the cars in front of us moved into the slow lane. We were going past the cars, and were moving over to the slow lane, when here comes Horsepower Harry up beside us. He started lunging so, I figured what the heck, and dropped a gear, and pushed to half throttle (maybe a little more). Mr. HH was nowhere to be seen, and I glanced in my rearview, to see him quite a distance behind us. I let off, and eventually, he finally caught up and passed us, like the boss he was.
This was in our comfortable Grand Cherokee.......V6. Now I remember.

aww thats not fair

3800lbs and 160 horsepower from the 80's

what do you expect? The cars nowadays come with 250-300hp and 4-cylinders in 2800lb vehicles...
Even with 400hp the Camaro won't pass a 280 horsepower 4-cylinder car.

Its why I put a chevy drivetrain in a 2800lb 4-cylinder car :D

IROC 5.7= 3350lbs.-230hp

You're correct... I shouldn't have sold it 10 years ago. I should have kept it, and get embarrassed by an SUV, after driving like an as*hat.
I still have the GTA, and it certainly wouldn't be embarrassed in that manner.

Re: Now I remember why we sold the IROC

Glad I didn’t buy my IROC to go out and race people..

My Honda Accord is probably faster but it’s also boring to drive and doesn’t draw a crowd when I take it out.. Little kids don’t give me thumbs up when I creep on by..

If the point is speed, build it.. Some guys on here won’t get beat.. I’d bet a Grand Cherokee could beat every generation of Camaro aside from certain models.. I guess everyone should sell their Camaros..

Maybe you meant to post that on the Jeep forum, are you looking for someone here to give you a high five for that whimsical anecdote?

Are you also saying you would have partaken in the asshattery had you been with said GTA?

sad isn't it, how they squeeze an extra 50-100hp from engines half the size these days

Just take a deep breathe people.

If your ego needs a lift... a suggestion... avoid Grand Cherokees. There are several that, unbelievably, have Hemi's.
Of course, you will recognize the SRT and Trackhawk, simply by your car vibrating trembling (in fear?).

I do enjoy a sunny day cruise in the GTA but, it is far from stock.

Be sure to hit YT to watch all of your favorite Camaro vids., and get to your safe place.

Not sad, as much as, incredible. The engineering is amazing, until something decides to malfunction.

More valves per cylinder, better breathing heads, better cam(s), higher stall, and better tune. Incredible? No. Amazing? Not really. Sad? Yes, and by yes I mean the comparison. Try running that comfortable V6 Grand Cherokee against a comfortable fifth gen Camaro w/3.6 V6 next time. Or try borrowing an 80's Jeep Cherokee and run it against that same IROC and see how it does. I mean what's next, will Tesla owners start coming to bash a thirty year old car? Jeez guys lol... :)

sad because it used to be so simple

slap a blower and a carb, $1.45/gallon for 93 and go

now its turbo this, ethanol that, big block inside a small block

Yes, the engineering is amazing. If it was anything but...it would have found it's way into the thirdgens. The tech wasn't imagined in the 80's.
And if you, along with the other nay-sayers, would realize the point. I wasn't running anyone, the point is he was under the impression that he is untouchable, and driving like an idiot to prove his point.
I never went over 75mph. Had I wanted to run him, I would have prepared by turning on the sport mode, turning off the eco mode, and manual shifting. I shamed him in a luxury suv, that can go places his car can't dream of.
The 5th gen V6 Camaro has a whopping 5hp more. Undeniably less weight as well. And you wouldn't stand a chance against a Tesla.
I'm not bashing the car, I have a thirdgen, it's more about the driver.
Wooo-sahhh!

And, the Jeep guys suggested posting this here.

accctually lol

in 1989 Nissan had a 250rwhp 2.0L in a 2800lb vehicle that went 12 seconds from the factory
they never sold the car here, but we bring them here all the time "Silvia"

By 1995 it was 300rwhp and the car was nearly 11's with a tire, ALL original.
Those motors went 200,000+ miles reliably. I drove one from 200k to 240k over the course of 3 years with the original 20 year old equipment.
With a turbo/injectors/ecu "typical mods" it would do 400rwhp reliably for 10~ years (after already being used for 10 years and having 100k on the clock)

So the tech was there. Just not in the United States. it wasn't until we copied the Japanese designs (seems like it took 10-15 years for American engines to catch up) ....
fun fact the fuse box cover in my avatar is from that car

Re: Now I remember why we sold the IROC

You have no clue what was under the hood of that 30 year old car that cost 1/3 new of what a grand cherokee cost today. So the guy, or kid, in the camaro was being a dick just like countless numbers of other people, even 6cyl cherokee drivers. Maybe it would be a better idea to find a soccer mom minivan forum to post your road demon conquests on. I bought my 1988 IROC brand new in 87, and never once thought about getting rid of it. The car was never the fastest thing on the road, not then or now, but it will sure as hell take a turn better than a cherokee.

The Paragraph reads like an excerpt from a novel, it's likely the whole story is fabricated. I can't imagine anyone in an IROC trying to drag race some old lady's suv. The guy was probably bored and decided to make it up.

Re: Now I remember why we sold the IROC

This is just my opinion, but seems pretty valid. What happens is a kid in their late teens, early 20's can't afford a new sports car, so they buy a third gen with the idea of making it faster and fixing it up. They join this website, but have a very hard time understanding what it takes to tune an engine properly, they refuse to read the stickies, they don't dive into heads and cam swaps because they don't know how to... and even if they did, they can't figure out why it is running slower with the high performance parts, or they simply convince themselves an engine swap is coming but never does. Then they soon end up getting aggravated and frustrated, and the car just sits. Time goes by, and they find themselves in a newer vehicle that is tuned properly from the factory, in which more than likely runs 13's in the 1/4 mile, which of course "feels" like this unbelievable machine in comparison to the turd that they either sold, or simply left to rot due to their own lack of skills. After years of misery that they brought upon themselves because they didn't, or simply couldn't, learn anything here, they then feel the need to come back on here and bash their own vehicle by using someone else's as an example. This is what it seems like. Most guys that got these cars to run 12's, 11's and faster moved on to newer cars, but they always have a tremendous amount of respect for the third gen. It's always the guys that failed that come back and bash them, for personal reasons, I guess.

Re: Now I remember why we sold the IROC

According to sources online V6 Grand Cherokees run 1/4 mile times anywhere from 16 to 17.1 seconds

IROCs did 14.3-15.3 depending on the setup..

so nope.

My IROC and my Tahoe LTZ are faster than a V6 Grand Cherokee

(Tahoe does 15.2 and has the 3.42 rear)

Did anyone get into these cars because of their blazing speed? I thought it was because they were/are cool. They look awesome, handle damn good and have a fun/torquey feel from stoplight to stoplight..

I think some folks are reacting to the (I sold my IROC because it’s slower than my brand new SUV) title.. It’s just silly.

Speaking of hemi, I have another funny story. A couple years ago I was in my truck behind a new hemi Challenger at a stoplight, and next to him was a '66 Chevelle. They start talking so I inform my wife a race is about to happen.

They start making some noise, the light turns green, and the guy in the Challenger kills the engine with the clutch. So I lay on the horn, and I don't mean beap beap, I hold it solid for probably 3 seconds so everybody is looking at him and to get him flustered. :D I finally hear the hemi come to life, he spins the tires and tries to go as fast as he can. Meanwhile, I had put the truck in 4WD, so I snap the throttle and start catching up until the 45 mph speed limit. :lmao: I guarantee I had 10x the fun he did.

Meh. The cool thing about having an old iroc is that nobody really knows what you might be running. Could be a wheezer lg4, or it could be a high horsepower monster. I like that unpredictability. Everyone knows what your Cherokee is capable of. There's no x factor because I doubt many are modified.

Bang on. You see it all the time, posts from kids who spend 400 on field-fresh Camaro and start talking about LS this and 500+hp that but forget the fact that their seat is going to fall out of the car if they hit a pot hole too hard. Next thing you know, they've blown their budget on 27 rattle cans of black paint, abandoned the car again, and haven't been on the forum since 2014. It's unfortunate. I'm 21, and thankfully I've put myself in a position where I get to enjoy both my S4 and a 5L Mustang, both of which will walk any factory 3rd gen without hesitation. Yet I also respect the fact that these cars were great in their day - their day being the times where manufactures would hype a car for having fuel injection. Out of my cars, I still enjoy driving my GTA more than anything, even though I can out run it on my bicycle. These cars are cool, and increasingly uncommon, and even the guys with carb'd automatic 305's won't argue the fact that rip-roaring donuts in an empty parking lot will lighten the worst of moods on any given day. It's what these cars do and they do it well.

Anyways, ya slightly off topic but you just had a good point haha.

Bottom line, for all the warm memories many have of the muscle car era of the 60’s and early 70’s, the golden era of performance is RIGHT NOW. Never has there been a time that it was possible to buy brand-new cars with 500-600-700 horsepower engines right off the dealership floor.

That being said, I still prefer my ‘88 IROC on a cruise, even though I know I can waltz over to the nearest Chevy dealer, and buy a V6 Camaro that will run circles around my IROC.

Then again, I don’t see people staring at new Camaros at red lights, or people taking pictures of a new Jeep running around town..both happen pretty regularly to me when I’m cruising around in my IROC, mostly because they’re fondly remembered, and not frequently seen being driven.

Example yesterday saw a brand new 2018 5.0L mustang 'jerk' driver, weaving in traffic etc...

Re: Now I remember why we sold the IROC

the sociology book says that laws are created to protect the property of the wealthy.

Laws are often used for evil/gain, used by thieves. For every one caught, how many escape?

The fact you can 'hire a lawyer' and pay your way out of trouble with $$$ reinforces the idea that those wealthy thieves are untouchable as long as they have that $$$.

How many will buy brand new 500-700hp cars, get caught racing then hire lawyers and escape? Meanwhile 120horsepower 20 year old car and driver get impounded for the same crime, no chance for them.

The system simply isn't fair to those without wealth. Coming to a public forum and pretending that police and law is 'god' is just one side of the story.

Cars will drive themselves pretty soon. Hot rodding and combustion engines are dying. The last of a great American tradition will die with most of us, as our kids or their kids don't even know how to drive, don't understand the purpose of it.

So this is your justification for selling your IROC, years ago? Okay, gotcha!

I wanted to thank the OP.
Thanks to him, I sold off my IROC, and bought a Cherokee. I slapped some 22`s on it, and now I`m on the prowl for some Lambos.

I've never understood posts like the original post. These cars are 30'ish years old. People act like these cars are in production now and only have 230HP. I don't think anyone buys a 30+ year old unmodified car and expects it to compete with new cars.

And if someone does buy one to compete with new vehicles. That's half the fun. Modifying it!

That is the point. Everyone here knows that our cars stock can't compete with new cars, but the guy in the story did. He did buy a 30+ year old unmodified car and expected it to destroy everything on the road.

my firebird is super fun to drive but its NOT fast. I also don't drive like an "*** hat" so it all works out. im sure my wife's Hyundai sonata would kill me in a race. cars are fast these days.
