Sportsman II guys, info please

I searched and got little info in the way of what type of performance gain you recieved when you installed the Sport II's. I was wondering what your gains were, or what you thought they would make you gain. I will be switching cam, thinking the crane powermaxCRN-104224 from summit. I know you cannot give me info on my exact combo, I'm just interested in finding out what the gains would be before making the investment. My setup is a stock 88 5.7 with hedman shorties. I will be changing the intake also, but I am just checking my options. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I recommend a VERY well breathing intake to compliment the 200cc intake runners. As far as hard numbers I wont be able to give times untill friday when I hit the track. They pull good, but were designed way back in the carb days when RPM's weren't so hard to find.

Hope you get some good times. At times I think I'm just gonna rip all this TPI off and go carbed!!!

I dont think that Im going to on this combo, not at all...

I'm running into to many problems, I'm kinda unhappy with the guy who built the tranny, Its to slow between 2-3-4, and it doesn't stall high enough, the 200cc's obviously dont lend themselves to low end power, and I dont have the intake (however ported it may be its still stock) to breath where the sportsmans want to.

I think the LT1 intake and some firmer shifts however and it could be low 13's, but as it sits its just to mismatched.

88ROC1LE 06-20-2002 05:34 PM

I was thinking about the LT1 intake swap, it's tempting. I would take care of that tranny, that is a big key to e.t! I will be getting a vigilante for mine once I figure out what to do with the heads and such, just waiting on the $$$ Did you have your tranny rebuilt by a local shop or was it a kit(transgo,b&m,etc...?)

tpi_roc 06-20-2002 05:42 PM

The LT1 will be the perfect compliment to sportsmans. Im deffinatly going this route, have been for a while, just moving slowly on it.

I had purchased the tranny parts and taken it to a very reputable guy who's been around for years, built many trannys for people I know and family members. I think he's seen his day though, getting old and looks like he took a couple naps through completing the tranny.

1-2 shifts with authority, but after that it might as well be a cadillac.

88ROC1LE 06-21-2002 04:07 PM

On mine the 1-2 is great, and the 2-3 is a little laid back. I think that the switch to 3.73's or 3.42's will help a bit. I know the vig. will help, no matter what combo I get. I was talking to a friend in Louisville last night and he thinks he can get me a deal on vortech heads and a vortech intake. What do you think of that setup tpi_roc?

tpi_roc 06-21-2002 05:01 PM

Deffinatly a good choice for the street, for sure. If you have the oppertunity port them or send them in to be ported, then you can pull a few rpms when necissary, a combo like that will really optimize street torque so dont go to high with a vigi stall, i'd say a 2,600 MAX

88ROC1LE 06-22-2002 05:38 PM

cool, I got the deal worked out and I will be getting them soon. They are the irons with the 1.94/1.50 valves. THANKS for the suggest on the vig. stall, I had no idea where to start. Have you seen any cams that work well with the vortech/TPI setup? I will be getting the stuff to reprogram the prom so that is no big issue.

tpi_roc 06-22-2002 08:00 PM

Hotcam

88ROC1LE 06-24-2002 10:06 AM

That's what I was thinking. Thanks for the help, and good luck with your car!

tpi_roc 06-24-2002 10:46 AM

Well im sorry, things didn't go good.

My times were horrible, and everytime I passed the 1/8th my transmission reeked of burnt clutch. I'm going to have a long talk with the person who built my tranny and get it taken care of so I can see what the ENGINE has for power, unfortunatly this friday it was all spent in 2-3 second shifts.

88ROC1LE 06-24-2002 02:06 PM

What sort of 1/8 mile times did you have? May be time to go probuilt or get some serious internals. I had mine pieced together from transgo, B&M, and some corvette goodies, and the guy said something about the 2-3 is weak on these even with strenghting. He told me when I am ready to switch to a TH350 to let him know, but I don't see that in the future, being this car makes a LOAD of highway trips:rolleyes: MAYBE YOU JUST MAKE TO MUCH POWER:p :hail:

tpi_roc 06-24-2002 03:08 PM

Personally I'm not on the TH350 bandwagon, but again thats just me.

This transmission is the 700R4 that came with the car, It was rebuilt once (on the 305) and man did it run like a champ, thing shifted with neck snapping authority, and was strong in all gears. Then due to some engineering marvel of GM (and anybody else who has an in-radiator cooler) I ended up with water in the trans which means rebuild time :(. So I sent it 4 hours north to a "trusted" rebuilder who does "Excellent" work (I heard this before with my painter, another story) I gave him part numbers, brand names, everything. I told him every last thing I wanted in there, and he thought he had a better idea on a few things. Anywho, proved him wrong in one trip down the strip.

It slips every gear like a cadillac, reeks of clutch when I pass the 1/8th to the rest of the track, and stalls like a circle track car :(

Some peoples kids....

Blueiroc 06-24-2002 04:40 PM

I solved my slipping problem with the 700r4, I s***canned it and threw in a th350 with a full manual valvebody, yeah one down fall is I have to shift it through every gear and put it back in first at every stop like a manual but I will say one thing it shifts like a sledgehammer every gear no slipping but I guess depends on what ya want I guess

tpi_roc 06-24-2002 04:57 PM

Yup

And i want an overdrive with TCC :)

88ROC1LE 06-25-2002 05:36 PM

I got to have that overdrive, and I guess we can add that guy who did your rebuild to the "trusted" why did I do that list!;)
