MAF vs. speed density
 
What is the main advantage of a Mass airflow system vs. a Speed density system?

One person I talked to, said the Maf systemcan't flow as much air as a SD system.

Unless you are encountering problems, stick with your MAF system. There are plenty of guys running some pretty extreme combos with MAF and very happy.

I have a good friend that is currently running a 383 with a Miniram, AFR 195s Competition Ported with 2.05/1.60 valves and he has no problem with his MAF setup. We did have to modify the eprom as he maxes the MAF at 4500-4800 rpm and his engine makes max power around 6,500 rpm, but it's no big deal.

In fact, if he had SD, we would have had to do more initial tuning of the eprom over the MAF system. But that is not a big deal either. But the MAF system is simpler to get "started".

Regardless of your setup, you should look at eprom burning. I find the spark tables are the key to getting max power (once you have the proper fuel mixture). But don't blindly dump your MAF.

I fully intend of keeping the MAF system. The point I'm trying to get at, is if the MAF system does not flow as much air even with MAF "gutted", then I am going to try to cut out sensor area from MAF, mount it in a larger diameter of PVC pipe, make my own airbox inlet (another air flow restriction I am told) cause we all know that one of the keys to getting a SBC to run is to get it to breath!

So, with that in mind, can anybody tell me if there is a difference in air flow. Maybe somebody can supply the dismeter on a SD opposed to a MAF. Does anybody know of a MAF sensor that is larger diameter that is adaptable to our cars? Any experiances in increasing inlet flow would be appreciated!

I suspect that was the case. Let me first say there is no way in heck that your MAF meter is not letting enough air in your engine.

We are making over 500 cHP and 600cFt-lbs with the stock gutted MAF meter. I would love to try if someone would lend me.....guess I can try it this weekend! This will be cool. Sorry just thinking outloud. What a stock MAF meter will do in my car!!! My Dad has one I can take off his vette and put into mine to see what it does as far as performance! I will let you all know.

Anyways, your MAF meter is perfectly fine. All too many people are misinformed and think their MAF is an air restriction. Its NOT. And I am going to be doing some other tests with a single plane intake to take my setup even further in ET and power output as soon as the manufacturer completes the intake.

I am fully confident you can run the MAF meter well into the 10s and even lower with no problems.

Unless your crankin a whole lot more power out of that motor than I think. Your probably going to do more harm than good with your home-made MAF meter. But then again I think it would be neat to see what you come up with.

This is my opinion, based on facts collected on my own car and others running equally well or quicker. They are not intended to start a pissing match, just giving my opinion. Others are welcome to their opinion. Just hope you can back it up with substantial evidence.
