Hp Gain on removing smog Equipment? Can any one tell me if there is a worthwhile Hp increase by removing all smog equipment?:confused: |

no hp gain, just makes the engine bay less cluttered and easier on the eyes. |

depending on how much smog you are removing. If ALL of it is going, you could gain a few here and there. Losing the air pump could free up some poundage and lessen the parrasidic loss due to drag of the v/serp belt. Cat removal would be a good way to lessen backpressue and also bring more sound out of your car. Just make sure you re-tune your car due to the change in smog equipment. Removing EGR will cause you to get SES codes and also could lead into running rich. |

Removing EGR will cause you to get SES codes and also could lead into running rich. the EGR isnt a smog componet and actually gives your better gas miliage when you're crusing down the hwy.... taking it off isnt a great idea.. ours are computer controled anyway, so they arnt on when you're flooring it for power... taking it off will only effect your gas miliage.. unless you go thru the work of setting up the car for no EGR... but theres no point in that since it isnt costing you anything.... unless you swap manifolds or somthing... |
Removing the egr does keep intake temps down a little though. But your not gonna go 14.5 to a 14.4 by losing it. |

1 Attachment(s) I removed my crap (I live in michigan). It makes it much easier to work around on the engine and not so much stuff sittin around in there. I have a pretty empty engine bay now that ive taken all of it out, and having an LG4 helps out too! |
When i removed mine it didnt effect performance noticeably at all, but sorry, I just realized I was in TPI board, but the equipment is similar I'm sure. Does anyone know how to get rid of the tube sticking out of my manifold now? it is ugly and everyone asks why it is open. I tried to take off the nut holding it on and damn they are tight. |

The main reason not to remove the EGR is because the ECM is tuned to work with it, if you are willing to get a custom PROM to program it out, theres no reason to keep it. If youre using the stock programming, keep the EGR. |
I took off the cat first. Then when I got headers I dropped the Air pump. When I drop in my new motor over the weekend I'll take off the a/c since I got the 1LE pully for it. I had tuning issues but when I dropped the emmisions stuff I reset the computer by unhooking the battery then the car started to really pick up so I think It made a big diffence for me. But also I think the bearings in the pump were shot too so... |
when i first got it i was curious as to what it was, and i found out that it just pumped air into my exhaust manifolds , is this really better for air wtf?, so i decided just to remove it. At the time I was getting weird mixture, and i was backfiring when i let off the gas, so I removed the whole smog pump and lines, and it stopped backfiring. |

a good way to keep it legal and free up some hp is get a exhaust cutoff from summit or jegs, and weld that just after the headers. then you can flip a switch and run open exhaust, switch it again and you run it through the exhaust system. its a good way to keep it legal, avoid troble with cops and at the same time free up some backpressure when you need the extra hp and the growl. give it a try! |

I saw no increase in mph or decrease in elapsed times on an 1/8th mile track when I removed my smog equipment, pump, piping, etc. It did; however, cut the amount of time in half that it takes to change spark plugs, wires, sensors, etc. |
