Addicted to TPI Torque I have a 91 Z28 LB9 auto with 273 gears. Now I know my car will not do impressive 0-60 or 1/4 mile times but in first gear when the rpm 2500 to 5000rpm it pulls real hard. This makes it a lot of fun to drive around stop light to light. On an average day I hit 5000rpm at least 10-20 times.I just love the feeling of torque and all credit goes to the TPI system designed more than 20 years ago. What also amazes me is that as hard as I drive the engine-tranny don't seem to be getting any worse. Just my 02. |
Well... 5000 rpm isnt torque. Thats horsepower bud. But yes, tpis are alot of fun. |
isnt the crossover point from torque to hp 5250 rpm? |
I am 100% with you 91!!!! The now old school tpi has done nothing but impress me with high TQ and low HP. You buy TQ and race HP, more or less. TPI is fun stuff!:2cents: |
Yup, Hp and Torque are equal at 5252 RPM. |
peak torque in TPI cars is around 3200rpms or so. from about 2600 to 4000 rpms TPI pulls its best. at about 3700 or so, torque is falling off fast and hp is taking over to about 4500rpms. after that, there isnt much anything, torque or hp. tpi doesnt like high rpms but wiht 2800 stall, at the strip that TPI torque gets her off the line in a hurry. makes it look like a 12 second car but it only does 13.8-14.0's. LOL |
It is kind of hard to compare Hp and Torque, since Hp is a derived from Torque. I'm a big fan of the TPIs too!!!! |
TPI=Torque Producing Injection ;) The first 3rd gen I ever drove was an '88 with a TPI 305 and an automatic. I couldn't believe a 305 could pull that strong. It was the only time I've ever been pulled over by the cops (no ticket though!) |
[QUOTE]Originally posted by rcwest32 [B]TPI=Torque Producing Injection ;) I Like That!! Feel it in your pants, smell it from your tires! :driving: |
I like the look of TPI, but traded it in for a stealthram. Which for a while, pulled as hard as my TPI ever did, and pulled even higher up top. Then the motor cooked a bearing after overheating (t-stat failed in a closed position) during a pass and that was all she wrote. Now I'm selling all of my TPI stuff and going LT1 or maybe LS1 if I can be patient enough to gather the extra cash. Then again, my old TPI setup wasn't a slouch down low. AS&M semi-siamesed runners, ported base, ported plenum, ported heads, cam, headers, no cat, etc.... Too bad it wiped a bearing the first time at the track, never know how fast it could have gone. |
theres nothing better than tappin that gas pedal in stop and go traffic and everyone around you watching you car rock up cause of the torque. It means a lot comming from a 91 celica 2.2L http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...a/84323d45.jpg |

Just imagine a well tuned 406 under that TPI!! I know it would run out of breath quick, but damn wouldn't it put out some massive torque! |

what rpm is that at? and whats the hp? |
Yeah, it is fun lol TPI does suck on anything past a 350 though :-( Thats the reason my 383 is going vortec Stealthram, I have to be a traitor on this one. Going to borrow some slicks to see how good it will go at the track for I swap it though. My 383 in my Formie is just awesome, it will shift OD about 110 at WOT and just keep on pulling lol. Tach is barely climbing and the speedo just keeps knocking off higher and higher numbers lol I just hate the fact that it is done at 4.8-5k, kind of like shutting off. That one goes Stealthram That GTA is staying stock TPI though, it is scheduled to undergo new valve springs and seals and a prototype GM TPI intake that I have managed to acquire :-) Should be interesting and best of all , it will still be factory :-) lol later Jeremy |
tpi is more suited for a boat really:-/. yea it pulls awesome for what it is but yea... o yea torque is what gets u goin fast, hp is what keeps you there. |

Re: Re: Addicted to TPI Torque Originally posted by 85z28guy Thats what I used to say to my buddies till the whole thing grenaded. Just be prepared for it to happen;) What specific part(s) broke on your Z28. I always thought Chevy small blocks were bullit proof. Not sure how tough the 700r4 is though. |
I totally destroyed the 700r4. Like one minute it was perfectly, no signs of trouble. I took it to a very reputable shop, and he found me a core because he said there was like no good parts left in the tranny:p The motor was good tho, I just sent the balancer through the timing cover:rolleyes: |

Re: Addicted to TPI Torque WTH? sneezed and my post ended up on wrong thread |
Re: Addicted to TPI Torque Not only is the torque amazing. It's the prettiest motor out there, bar none. More prettier than the plastic top motors. :thanks: |
Re: Addicted to TPI Torque Well at least it looks like you’ve revived a particularly righteous thread! |
