emissions for a non-CA moving to CA

Hey, I have slp headers and full exhaust on my 89 L98 car and am looking at moving to Fresno, CA. Do I need to get a set of headers w/ AIR fittings and put the smog pump back on it ?? Right now, it doesn't even have a CAT, which I know would have to be put on . . .

I have never had to deal with emissions but have heard people talk about various types/methods used across the nation.

Thanks for any insight on the matter

You'll have to put everything back on it! egr too. As for the headers-some smog stations will pass the visual if you have the air tubes on them and working. And then....you might hit a butthead that wants to see oe #'s for all aftermarket parts! Just make sure that you get it "pre-tested" somewhere first-don't ever get the dreaded "gross polluter" status on your car; then even after it passes you'll have to go to the state inspection stations only for a few years. I guarantee you don't wanta' do that!

It'll fail visual without that stuff on the car. I am pretty sure Fresno is not in an 'enhanced' area, so it should just be a sniffer and not one of the dyno tests.

Fresno... why you going there?

Man, why do you want to move to a state like Calif.?

If it for work, there are plenty of other states that would love to have you and will not give you the crap calif. does with your F-car.

Take Fla., it has everything Calif. has but is on the east coast, no state income taxes, and no bull s__t inspections that are based upon somewhat bogus science............ I could go on and on, but you get the picture!

Just my $.02

Fresno has treadmill test. (Enhanced - Smog II).

thanks for the replies, now I have a few more questions. First, what exactly does the "enhanced" standards mean, what is the treadmill test, and how stringent is the visual test generally. If I were to put slp headers w/ AIR fittings and put the smog pump back on, would I be good to go ? Also, I noticed mention of part # verification, would the slp headers fall under that category ?

Thanks for putting up with all the questions guys. I'm not 100 %sure the move will happen, but Univ. of Cal. at Fresno is looking pretty solid for a teaching position for my wife next fall. Hard to turn down the greenstamps !!!

Later,
JJ

I replied, but I guess it was one of the ones that got hosed.

Anyways, it kinda depends on the smog tech as to if they will overlook stuff or not. The state does try to bust people for BS and has 'undercover' people take in cars that are rigged up to fail visual/functional type checks, so if a shop got busted by them they tend to be alot more strict. Without knowing someone its hard to say what the guy will do. If anything, you can go to some different places and show them the engine up front and they will either refuse right away or try it to see if it will pass. Make absolutely sure you ask for a pre-test before they send any info to the state first. I am kinda thinking the SLP headers were only 49-state legal (excluding Cali) but I could be wrong. People have passed with them here though anyway.

The treadmill test isnt any worse than the regular sniffer test unless something is really wrong with the car, then the numbers go right through the roof, whereas sometimes with the sniffer a bad running car can get by. If you put a new cat on there it should pass no problem though.

In case you missed it before, its California State University, Fresno. There are 2 university systems, the Cal State and the University of Cal, the Cal State schools are 'lower' on the totem pole and cheaper tuition but IMO the quality of education isnt really different.

Thanks for the info, now I know why I remember the acronym "CSUF." My wife has been pretty impressed with people from CSUF and was also happy that tenure track positions at CSUF compare well to other schools in California money wise.

I was considering selling the car, but am pretty sure I'll keep it now should we move. It is not my daily driver so I'll have plenty of time to get it up to standards.

I just smogged my car at a "CHECK ONLY" station... passed no prob, see post in DIY-PROM.

I will be tranfering to CAL POLY SLO, or NORTHRIDGE next fall. God bless the CSU's affordable, great education.

Might I suggest Ventura County. It is a little Pricy, but it is very clean, with exception to Oxnard, but Oxnard is cleaner than Fresno I think. Plus the weather here is unbeatable. Fresno gets HOT. Look into Port Hueneme. It is cheap(for now) and right next to the beach, and they are building lots of new housing here and selling it relatively cheap. Only disadvantage is you have to drive through Oxnard to get here. Not to bad though.
Plus there is a new CSU opening here. Cal State University Channel Islands, CSUCI, Ha.

If you move here, welcome.

Actually the air in Fresno isnt bad, but south of there it is. It circulates around the valley starting from the NW area, heading south to Bakersfield, then along the mountains east of Fresno, and out the SF area. If you are gonna move there, move to Clovis, its slightly more expensive but a much nicer area to live. The NW area is also fairly nice.
Does get hot there in the summer, averages around 100 during summer months, and it gets cold in the winter. 2 years ago it snowed

Probably the most important thing with your car is that all the stuff is on it. From there, you have to find a decent mechanic who will kinda overlook stuff. They are out there.

Yah, but at least we CA people know how to vote, Mr. Palm Beach. :D

Check out CA's smog check webpage at http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/ for more info on bringing non-CA cars into CA.
