86 stock tune cam

so i am getting a 86 TA 305 tpi, auto car for CHEAP! only issue is the PO just kept driving when the electric fans stopped working.. like for weeks... so needless to say the moter is in sorry need of a rebuild.. and new heads.. im gonna rebuild and flip it or possibley give to my lil bro.. but while im tearing it apart i want to put in a cam with a lil more balls... i know its a 305 and am well versed in their limitaions but this is not a race car.. im gonna run headers and dual exaust and ditch the stock intake tubing but thats about it.. ive searched for a while but all i can find is ppl with roller cams or tuning done.. oh yeah im told its gonna be a non roller block because its an 86 so it was assembled in 85 and thats pre roller blocks.. ive heard LT1 and ZZ4 cams are good but they are roller cams... any help would be nice... thanks in advance guys

so i want to apoligise for the redundancy of this question.. im still looking for more threads on this but still am only finding modified engine and roller cam "this cam" threads... lol and the one cracked me up the guy was a real a$$ when he dident get a reply right away :bs:... just to clarify im more asking for tune compatibility.. im not really worried about how much HP i make.. anything over the measly 190 "ish on a lucky day going down hill" will make me happy.. i gotta replace the cam anyway so WTH...

Re: 86 stock tune cam

I would go with the 204/214 and get a warmed up chip. That's just me. It would probably be work at least 25 horse (more with an exhaust) and even though it would like a tune it would probably do okay with out it. I believe an 85 box is different than an 86 box. Since 86-89 appear to use the same ECU if the chip is compatible I'd use that cam with an 87-88 bin. That would put you way in the ball park of that cam. Then again it's also MAF so you do have some wiggle room. It would likey be a better question for the PROM tuning board in some ways.

ED:that being said a home made cable can be made for about $10 (less if you're like me and have piles of hoarded electronic parts) and then you can use a Willem programmer that's on ebay for about $50 with a 20-30 buck adapter board from Moates. Not the most optimal setup but if you have a laptop that would get you tuning for less than $100.

like i said im looking for somthing to throw in and drive.. i have 4 years of electroninc maintinace expierience in the marine corps so im not afraid to pull the ecu apart and re chip it.. but if i do that i might as well do it with a 350 swap.. but thats not in the near future of this car... my 2nd gen camaro and 69 c10 have priority.. lol sorry.. im just saving this great third gen from a certain death by ignorance...
