my cars idle is driving me crazy!!!!
 

i have been having a annoying problem and its been driving me absolutly nuts for the past 3 weeks, i have an 86 z28 350 tpi i recently put edelbrock shorties on and after that it just seems like everything that was wrong with the car got worse, when at idle, it will surge from 1000rpms to 500rpms and then will stop then start then stop on and on, when i put my car into gear (drive or reverse) the car will die unless acted upon with a little thrust of the gas pedal. and then the other day i was sitting on a hill in nuetral and when i rolled out put it in drive and pulled to the stop sign i went to go and the car basically died, it was so weird i hit the gas and it just kinda sputtered across the road and it continued to do this for a while and then about a mile down the road there was no problems at all i am so confused with this car and i am so out of money because of this car, i love this car so much but i just cant get it to run right please some one help!!

Is the ECM logging any codes?

I had a similar issue last year. In the end I bought a USB OBD cable to read codes and monitor sensors from a laptop to solve the problem. It was my ECM.

...look at your O2 sensor as you were working in that general area.

My car doesn't throw any codes at all. It doesn't even have a service engine light at all. I've plugged the the the thing from Oreillys to check for codes and nothing pops up. Basically the machine is saying I don't have a computer... and my car has always died when trying to put it in gear it just go worse when I put headers on. And I only have one o2 sensor and it was the one that came with the car. I didn't use the one that came with the headers

Replace both MAF Relays, I had the same problem

where are those found at in my car i no its under the hood but exactly where im not sure, and is there a way to check to see if there bad first before i spent 10 bucks on it? (working at burger king doesnt pay for anything)

Ya I actually replaced the iac valve awhile ago so I didn't think that was the problem but Idk how possible it is that it could have been defective. Could the throttle positioning sensor have a role in this mayhem. If I push down on the tab on the tps the car will idle up (which is a given) but is it spose to make a pound constant clicking until it idles back down?

Just went to Oreillys and had them look up the maf sensor relays and it only had 4 prongs for the flat and the one on my car has five and there are 3 relays in a row to the right of the brake booster but im not sure which ones are for that maf sensor? Im so lost:/

I had sim probs w/ my 350 TPI. Rough idle,

Replaced MAF w/ new.
New TPS set voltage to .54v
ESC - new
Cleaned IAC
Replaced EGR Valve and Sol

Make sure fuel tank is well above 1/2 - 93 octane

Put a double dose of fuel inject cleaner in it.

My car runs like crap below 1/2 tank, especially around left turns, stalls.
Fuel pump gets starved, could be split in internal hose letting air in.

Runs good now, Still need CTS and a new IAC, new O2, to give me an all new base line. Fuel filter would help too.

whats that esc and i have no smog stuff at all except for the egr valve thats it. and you said you replaced the egr valve and the sol... whats the sol??

ESC is electronic spark control

Sol, is EGR Solenoid. Solenoids are discontinued, I put a used one in.

Mine on the 350 L98 is behind the distrib and coil, 2 vac hoses come off it.

Need emission in NJ for a few more year till it hits 25 years old, then I can classic tag it.

I did the ESC and the EGR cause I was getting codes, same w/MAF.

its been awhile but heres the update on my problematic car... i replaced the knock sensor after i did some research on it and when i took the old one out, 1 it was so dirty i had to scape at least 1/16inch of oil and grime off it to get the part number, 2 once i did this i looked up the part number and found that it was a knock sensor for a 305... i have a 350! after i found this out i thought about the computer since the previous owner is a complete dumb sh**. the prom chip is most likely wrong and also for a 305 i went ahead and ordered a stage one performance chip from jet and it come may 23... with all that said now im a little worried about my gas mileage, after i replaced the knock sensor my gas gauge has been at 1/2 tank for like 3 days, im not saying its stuck or not working, it just seems that im getting better mileage, but then again i was just recently getting 9 miles a gallon in a fuel injected car... so if anyone has any idea or questions about the gas thing let me know, thanks

Here's another update... I put in a new jet performance chip and it solved the problem of my car dying when I put it in gear and gave me better gas mileage. But a new problem has came up. When im deriving down the road with my foot on the gas accelerating obviously in drive I can hear a loud clicking sound come from right in front o my left leg... it sounds similar to an exhaust leak but I no its not cause it only does it when im accelerating... as soon as I let off the gas it stops, the clicking sound gets louder when I hit the gas but it doesn't get faster so I no its not something to xo when the car actually rolling its only when in drive and accelerating I no this cause I put the car in nuetral while rolling down a hill and hit the gas and the was no clicking sound... once again ONLY WHEN ACCELERATING and its pissing me off... if any one nos anything of Wat this problem might be... please help me out I feel like my car is going to explode

You are contradicting yourself. If it only does it when you are accelerating, then it actually points to it being an exhaust leak.

Just a guess, but it is probably the gasket at the collector area.

Ok this is in the complete wrong spot but I haven't been on thirdgen for so long I forgot how to start a new thread so im just posting it here... my buddy has a 98 base camaro with the chrome 5 spoke rims, Wat all do I have to do to put those rims on my car(86 z28) since he has 4 wheel disc brake and I have drums in the back? Just wondering if they'll fit?
