New Engine Codes
 

Hopefully this is in the right location on th site.

I have an 89 GTA 5.7L car. Car ran rough when I bought it, got it running better wit a new MAF, new TPS (and set correctly), and adjusting timing. Been driving it and it runs much better but still a little rough until it warms up. Today it finally lit the SES light. Two codes: 36 and 42. The list I have of codes gives three possible options for each code but the one common issue between the two is “fault at direct ignition system”. What does that mean and where should I start? It has new plugs and wires. Distributor?

In you case (with the TPI) the 36 is for a MAF burnoff cycle failure, and the 42 is for EST system failure.

i had the problem with the code 42 for awhile and what it turned out to be was the starter bracket closest to front of car was leaning against the knock sensor giving the false knock i would check that

Interesting. I’ll have to get under the car and look. I’m going to replace the knock sensor anyway. Thanks!
