Need some clarification here.. Hey guys..ive done a few searches on this but just needed a solid answer as far as deleting the stock oil cooler. Car is a bone stock 87 Iroc 5.0 TPI. Just to clarify, to delete i just undo the cooling lines..pull of the filter..the unscrew the cooler off the block?...question is..when i take it all off..can I then just screw on a new filter back onto the block or do i need to take/use anything off of the cooler to mount the filter? I understand i need to change the bolts to the adapter because the bolts currently in it are longer to keep the cooler from spinning..what size bolt do i need to use to replace them with? just want to run the straight filter but need to know if theres any adapters i need or is it the traditional oil filter thread under all that crap? second question..ive been getting mixed info on the numbers..but is there a specific filter number for running the "long" filter instead of the stock shorty since i wont be running a cooler and ground clearance shouldnt be an issue? Preferably a wix/napa filter. |
Re: Need some clarification here.. Guess if nobody here has done this is there a better place to find out?? |
Re: Need some clarification here.. Been a while since I looked at the one on my wife's 1987, but I seem to recall it looked like you could just remove the cooler housing from the block and the filter screws right in like normal. I use a fairly large Mobil 1 filter m1-302a, which I think crosses to a wix 51060. |
Re: Need some clarification here.. Here is another post in the cooling forum that might help you. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/cool...il-cooler.html |
Re: Need some clarification here.. Thanks guys..got it all done and wow..gained about 20lbs oil pressure..that old piece of junk apparently was clogged. Put on a wix long filter and replaced the oil pressure switch (which was leaking). Just had to change the bolts that held it in place. Good to go! |
