TPI delete

Lets try this here and see if I can get an answer. If I swap out the TPI for a carburetor will the fans come on as they do now or will that create problems with the ECM?

91 Z28 350 TPI
If I put aftermarket heads, intake manifold & carburetor on...
1. I will need a different distributor right?
2. Will the radiator fan come on when I turn the a/c on?
3. Will the radiator fan come on when the coolant sensor by the thermostat calls for it?
4. Will the radiator fan come on when the coolant fan switch in the right head calls for it?
The reason I would get rid of the TPI is don't' know enough about it, I can't tune it. I can tune a carb.

No one knows? I really would appreciate someone letting me know. Thanks.

There are a lot of excellent resources on this board for TPI and tuning. In particular, Tunedperformance. There are also a lot of great aftermarket intakes available for tuned ports.
I believe the fan would still come on with the switch on the pass. head but definitely not from the one on the intake. I am not sure on the A/c, and yes you would need an old style HEI.
You would also need to reduce the fuel pressure as TPI runs about 45psi.

Re: TPI delete

Yep on the distributor & fuel pressure.

I was going to leave the ECM in place. Are there any other issues disconnecting the TPI will cause? Torque converter lock up? Gauges? Tach?

Several write ups on the swap here. Tcc and speedometer won’t work without ecm Vss signal and tps/Vss for tcc . Tci makes a kit to convert. Might want to rethink expense and work to ditch efi.

I have searched & searched before I started this thread and again since the last post. I can't find anywhere that mentions removing the tpi causes the speedo to not work. If I remove the tpi and leave the ecm in place will the speedo not work? What about the cruise control?

Here it is from the Info pages on this site. It does not mention removing the computer so maybe just swap to carb, just don't hook up the air sensors and distributor and see what happens. This way if it does not work you can always go back, I would not recommend cutting anywires in the harness. I also recommend you hooking up a coolant sensor to the original pig tail in the new intake manifold so maybe the computer fan will still work.
Tunned Performance is who helped me with my tunning issues and we got mine to run great so I would not discount using him before you through the work required to do the swap.

I read all of that but thanks for posting.

I would like to know if it works BEFORE I do the swap, that may determine weather I do the swap or not.

I won't cut any wires.

I will use all the current coolant sensors.

"before you through the work required to do the swap."
Before I do the work? I know Tuned Performance knows a lot & so do many others. I appreciate all.
I'm good with mechanical stuff but when wires are coming out of it & it goes to one of those god awful computer things......OMG.

I would hope so since it is posted here on one of the main pages!

I know where you are coming from. I have always been more on the mechanical side and electrical, sensors, computers just scared the crap out of me! I went into it with an open mind and with a bunch of help from this forum I was able to not only get it running properly but learned somethings along the way. Without knowing what the issue is with your TPI maybe it would be worth it to look into getting it running properly before you remove it. It maybe as simple as a sensor or could be more....

It is running good now, because of a lot of help I got on here.
I was thinking about putting aftermarket heads on and putting a carb on it but the more I think about it I want to go with my original plane of putting a 454 in it with a carb.
