T-5 Input shaft question
 

I just pulled the trans...and I can move the input shaft a bit side to side...I assume that the input shaft shouldn't move at all, right?

Just hoping to be wrong here ;)

It's OK to have a bit of play in the input shaft - radial play at least. Remember, the pilot bushing/bearing supports the input shaft when the tranny is installed, so it's held pretty tightly then.

My original trans had a ton of side-to-side play when I removed it, but still shifted fine. No real worries unless the input shaft bearing starts getting noisy...

Totally normal. The input shaft is supported by its bearing that's pressed on & the pilot bushing/bearing in the crank.

OK...how much play in the input shaft is acceptable? The reason I pulled the trans is because I was getting some noise with the clutch engaged and the trans in any gear...which I troubleshot down to the throwout bearing.

When I examined the TO bearing, it has a bit of in and out movement...which it isn't supposed to have...but I am thinking that the input shaft may be part of the noise problem too.

I would like to install my new CF Dual Friction clutch, but feel that the trans is on the way out and don't want to ruin a new clutch in the process.

Any advice?

I should also say that the trans appeared to shift fine, but when I drained the fluid, there was a decent amount of shavings that trickled out at the end...

Also, I just went out and checked the play...it will move out to the bearing retainer in any direction with little resistance. The input shaft and output shaft endplay are both very minimal...so the issue appears to be just the input shaft sideplay.

This is a NWC trans BTW...if that makes a difference. Thanks for any input...

Like I said, and jmd said.....don't worry about it. Mine was a NWC T-5 too.

If there were minimal amount of tiny metal shavings towards the end of draining the fluid, then it could be normal wear and tear. Depends on how long it's been since the last fluid change.

If axial play seems minimal on both the input/output shafts, you're likely fine.

Only you know if there's anything wrong with it. Did it shift smoothly and no probs BEFORE you dicovered you had play in the input shaft?? To me, no symptoms = no problem.

OK...Unfortunately, my prior experience with manual trans has been with small domestic and imports (transaxles)...where play was bad...

I am going to reinstall the trans and hope for the best...
