Shifting problem?
 

I was driving my "new"(to me) 88 iroc z28 automatic and I gave it a little gas and it reved up to 7000rpm then shifted. I'm just going to take a shot in the dark and say that it's not supposed to be like that. Am I wrong? whats the shift point for these cars at near or close to WOT? Thanks.

Dosent sound good, even with a aftermarket stall converter thats high, is it all stock?
I would start by having the transmission flushed or changing the fluid and filter your self, if its stock this is a great time to install a drain plug to make future changes easier.

Yes it is all stock. I was thinking the fluids might be low. would that make any sense then?

I'm going to take a shot and say that the "tach" (I think that's the word they abuse to describe that image trim part in the dash with the pointer that waves around when engine speed changes...) is FUBAR, like they about always are; and that it reads WAY WAY high like they about always do. They read high by a proportion: like, if you have one that reads 33% high, then it'll show 1200 RPM when it's really doing 900; 4000 when it's really doing 3000; 6667 when it's really doing 5000; etc. Being only that far off (33%) is not unusual at all. I've seen more than one that reads TWICE the actual RPM, and some read even higher than that.

Aside from that, it's an automatic transmission. It should act pretty much like any automatic transmission in any other car. The sheet metal wrinkles don't really have much effect on that. So yeah, if it acts normal, then it's probably normal. If it acts wacked, then it's probably wacked.

But don't put too much faith in the "numbers" that the "sport-look trim package" in the dash shows.

These cars normally shift at around 4000-4500 at WOT, in D or OD; about like any other car or truck with the same model of transmission (pretty much any car or truck with a Chevrolet V8 from 83 to the present).

Hello, yes it shifts fine you are driving my first 3rd gen and it was like that when I bought it. That is a great car I still miss it and kind of regretted selling it, but happy with my current one.
