9 bolt VS 10 bolt rearends

what is a better rearend?
i would like to get a beefer rearend. but that is fairly cheap as well.
i found a 9bolt rearend on the hawks website which dont seem to be to bad.
are they stronger then the 10bolt??
reason i ask is im gunna put in bigger motor. got a new tranny for the extra power of the motor. and my last weakspot would be driveshaft and rearend. ill beef driveshaft last. so im just woundering abut the 9bolts. are they pretty much the same as a 10 bolt? if they fairly the same i might just fork up the extra dollars and get a 12 bolt or a 4th gen rearend.
im jsut trying to find the best way for the cheapest dollar.

any suggestions?

Re: 9 bolt VS 10 bolt rearends

The 9-bolt is stonger then the 10-bolt due to the 7 3/4 dia ring gear and different and better internals. Unless you are looking at 400+ hp and want to spend $2500 for a 12-bolt, I would go with the 9-bolt. I swapped in a 89 9-bolt years ago.

i'd go 9" if you think eventually you'll make any more power, sell the rear you have now for any profit you can, think of it as savings toward the 9". Have moser put on GM housing ends, buy some LT1 brakes from a local junkyard or whatever and you'll be set. I got my 9" from bob at exotic performance plus out of indiana. Really great guy to work with and much better prices than any other shop I've seen. he's a sponsor on ls1tech.com

i thought about a 9" rearend. but all the websites i seen for em are around 2 grand for the set up you just said. i dont have that extra cash on me. i was thinking maybe more around 500- 750 bucks. at the most.
how much did it cost you to get someone to build you one?

Re: 9 bolt VS 10 bolt rearends

mine has a lot more options than the average person would want, so my amount doesn't really count. The housing and axle package is $1000 from exotic performance off ls1tech.com then you'd need a center section, which I've seen on ebay for $499 or similar completely gone through. new bearings, etc. I popped 4 ten bolts and 1 9 bolt, so I got sick of working under the car for something I should have just bought the first time around. IF you're not running slicks or going to the track, then a ten bolt "should" be fine if you're not beating on it.
