Stripped tranny bolt; what do I do?

The bolt that is stripped is an 8 x 1.25mm, 20mm long. (it's one of the tranny pan bolts). I wanted to replace it with a 9 x 1.25mm, but two local hardware stores do not carry that bolt size.

What do I do?

I have metric & English taps & dies. One alternative is to mail order in some 9 x 1.25mm bolts OR go to a 3/8 - 16 or 3/8 - 24 bolt.

The car is an '87 with a 700R4 tranny.

I have never used a helicoil. Maybe next time. I solved the matter by going with a 3/8 - 16 tap & bolt.

Thank you for the replies.
