broken axle shaft lock bolt???

Has anyone ever broken an axle shaft lock bolt from cornering too hard?

ive broken three and all three times i did a massive powerbrake burnout with large sticky tires. i suppose its possible to break in a hard corner but unlikely, something else wore it out.

Its either that or my "C" clips...

I bought everything just in case, so when I pull the cover off I'll have what I need for sure:
new "C" clips
new lock bolt
new Royal Purple synthetic gear oil
new gasket
new differential additive

I am in Mesquite...

I'm confused, what is this lock bolt that you are talking about?

Re: broken axle shaft lock bolt???

The small pin/bolt that holds the center pin in the carrier which keeps the axles out so the c-clips don't fall out.

I've never broken one but I've removed a lot. It's only threaded in the carrier and is a pin through the center pin. When it breaks, there's usually less than a thread holding it in and there's no torque on the threads of what's left. I've always used a dental pick to thread it out of the carrier. Some people have had luck using a small drift punch and driving it through, breaking off the last of the threads allowing the center pin to be removed.

It holds the "pin", but the pin is actually a big chunk of steel, like a steel bar of soap, that sits between the axle tubes... and it itself, holds the C clips, from coming out...

Re: broken axle shaft lock bolt???

Ok, I know what a cross shaft retaining bolt is, but I couldn't figure out what an axle shaft lock bolt was. This bolt has nothing to do with the axle, it retains the cross shaft. The main purpose of this shaft it to give the pinion gears something to run on. That is why I couldn't figure it out. I never heard anyone call it that before. I thought you were talking about one of the bolts that holds the axle retainer on an axle with pressed on bearings.

Re: broken axle shaft lock bolt???

Can someone give me an idea of how to get this bolt out if the head is rounded? I've tried different size box ends and sockets and it is in there and will not turn, so instead it rounds off. Need to change bearings/seals and can't pull axles until this thing is out.. Help!! email is: eodtech72@gmail.com

Re: broken axle shaft lock bolt???

Only use a 5/16 six-point box end wrench. If the bolt isn't too badly rounded, you might still try, along with a crisp smack with a dead blow hammer.
