9-bolt ring and pinion question

I am looking to buy a set of gears for my 9 bolt and saw two sets listed on summitracing.com here:

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294894011

The Motive set says there are 10 ring gear bolts and the very expensive Strange set says there are 8 ring gear bolts. Is one a typo? How many bolts should there be for the 3rd gen 9-bolt ring year? Could one be for a different application? I'd like to order the Motive set, but want to be sure they're the correct ones.
Also, does anyone know where you can get 3.90 - 4.11 new gear sets for the 9-bolt? The ones sold on 9bolt.com are all used units and are pretty expensive to ship.

Maybe cheaper to swap in a 7.625". Motive makes a 3.909:1 for it, and there's even 4.30:1 gearsets out there.

Re: 9-bolt ring and pinion question

It's been a long time since I put a 9 bolt together. I have a set of 2.77 gears sitting on my bench. If I can remember I will check the bolts, but I think it has 8.

Atilla, do you know where you can find the Motive 3.91 sets for sale? Big gear head, I'd appreciate if you did take a look for me.

The 9 bolt has 8 bolts in the ring gear. I can get you a 3.70 for $170, but that's all. These gears make noise.

I am new to third gen. trans am. I recently acquired an 86. Its got the 9 bolt which I am also not very familiar with. Currently has 2.73 gear. After locating another 9 bolt for cheap I decided to stay with the 9 bolt. The new 9 bolt has the 3 series carrier that I will need for a desired 3.70 gear. Where can I get a 3.70 for that price if you dont mind me askin? All parts i've found are outrageous.

Have you checked Randy's Ring and Pinion? They have a 3.73:1 that's a lot less noisy.

Sorry I didn't see this until now. Summit racing was listing them, I haven't checked recently. Speedway is listing a 3.90:1, but I'm fairly certain that theirs is Chinese.

I got my new 3.89 gear from 9bolt.com yesterday in good shape in the mail like new.

First, I thought it was a 3.90, but is a 3.89 with 35/9 tooth.

Can't wait to install it sometime later.
