WHAT IS MY DIFFERENTIAL?????????????

Hello fellow 3rd Gen members,

I recently bought a used differential assembly. The guy I bought it from says it came out of an original (Stock) 1992 5.7 tpi irocz Camaro and that its a dual positraction differential. I no longer need the differential and I am trying to sell it. I've had potential buyers come to see it and "test" it to confirm that it's a dual posi differential. The differential is not installed on a vehicle and was tested that way. The potential buyers tested it by turning the "passenger" side disc brake rotor and found that the other side didn't turn in any direction. But when they switched over and decided to test again and turn the "driver" side brake rotor they found that the "passenger side rotor turned in the same direction as the "driver" side. Anyway, they were not convinced that its a dual posi since the "test" didn't give the same result when they tried rotating the "passenger" side rotor. And I'm not so sure myself. So my question is, what kind of differential do I have here? Is the outcome of the test a typical way a dual posi operates? I've attempted research online and found that '92 5.7 tpi Iroc's came with "Limited Slip dual-posi" differentials. In advance, any help/advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

just pull the rear end cover off and see, it sounds like its a posi thats getting a little weak from the "test" but since its not in a car id just pull the cover off and be 100% sure what it is

Re: WHAT IS MY DIFFERENTIAL?????????????

dual-posi
No such thing.

"Posi" is GM's old trademark for "limited slip", from the 60s; much like the other mfrs have their own names. It was just real popular, and it stuck.

Good idea to lay off the "dual" whatever. ;)

When you take off the cover, as any sensible person like you clearly are as evidenced by your posting here, would surely do before using it ANYWAY to renew the fluid, look in the little "window" in the carrier. If you see nothing but a shaft and 4 small gears, it's not posi. If you see some springs and some plates in addition to the gears, it's the usual stock Auburn POS that GM was using at that time.

Here's a pic of a couple of Auburns... the one on the left is a stock 2 series POS such as came in cars like that one, and the one on the right is a "high perf" 3 series POS.

While you're at it, count the teeth, so your next post won't have to be "what ratio is it". ;)
