700r4 vs 4l60 hey guys got an odd question. my buddy has a 93 firebird lt1 4l60 car. keeps having transmission problems. it is a cable operated 4l60 my question is what all would it take to put a 700r4 back in it. he doesn't care if it throws a code just wants to drive it. everything ive read says the cross member mounting is different. whats different about it? and will there be anything else he will have to do. |
Re: 700r4 vs 4l60 700-R4 = 4L60 Same exact identical no difference thing Sometime around 89-90ish, GM decided to rename their whole transmission line in a "standardized" fashion. 4 = # of gears L = longitudinal (front-wheel-drive cars are "T" for "transverse") 60 = some arbitrary relative torque "rating" 700-R4 of course means absolutely nothing whatsoever; just yerbasic pluck-from-anus random number. Forget about those "numbers". Your friend's car doesn't care what "number" its transmission is assigned. Crossmember is absolutely identical in every way, since the 700-R4 and 4L60 are the same thing. What is the transmission actually DOING? Maybe we can help him fix his 700-R4/4L60. Chasing after those "numbers" or "model names" is a waste of time, maybe we can actually HELP. |
Re: 700r4 vs 4l60 I knew all that already just wanted to make sure the mounts line up. I know they make different cross members for 4l60e swaps. any way his transmission is dead again. slips like a mofo. fluid is good and tv cable is adjusted properly. |
Re: 700r4 vs 4l60 I know they make different cross members for 4l60e swaps. 4L60E = 4L60 aka 700-R4, except with electronic instead of mechanical valve body control No difference whatsoever in anything to do with the trans mount or crossmember. So yeah, mounts will line up; assuming of course that the trans has a F-body (torque arm) extension housing on it. |
Re: 700r4 vs 4l60 Tail housing can be sealed eas . Or get a different torq arm mount. PS they make 4l60e swap cross members for third gen cars when using and ls motor and trans. Those mounts are obviously differen . Didn't know if the Lt cars were too. |
