Rebuilding 700r4
 

I have a 91 GTA with a 305 tpi and the 700r4, its a daily driver that is not beat. I want to rebuild the trans because if i give it too much throttle it slips at shifts. Can anyone tell me what i should upgrade and the best place to get parts? I also want to replace the torque converter.

I have a complete 709r4 built by bullet proof trans corvette servos all new clutches and plant geArs and comes with a 2800 stall al have less than 500 miles
Went with beefy t 5

Let go for 350.00 for all spent over 700 just in parts and 200 hundred in labor

Anyone have experience with Monster Transmissions?

No direct experience other than stories that I have come across on other forums. It seems to be either hit or miss with Monster. Mostly miss. These were rebuilt transmissions and not part kits.

YMMV.

That's what I read to, it sucks because their monster in a box looks like it has everything I would need at a decent price

Try not to shop just based on price. Consider tech support as part of the price of admission.

All shops have success and failure stories. My thinking is that most horror stories are operator/installer induced.

I second this. I've rebuilt a handfull of 700r4/4l60, a handful of TH350, a Ford C4, a TH200c, and an Infinity QX4 trans. Have used them every time cause their prices are great and they have all the upgrade stuff on hand.

I use those guys as well; prices are OK, not necessarily "the lowest" although usually at least pretty close, but they have the stuff, and their service is good.

I STRONGLY suggest getting the ATSG manual from them at the same time. DO NOT attempt to use the factory service manual!!! Its instructions apply STRICTLY to the parts that GM made available to dealers AT THE TIME, and do not take into account ANYTHING that has changed in the intervening 26 yrs. ATSG on the other hand is kept current.

Replace the sun shell; it is a high-stress part in a not-obvious area (it cracks around the hub in the center) and fails unexpectedly. Use the upgrade part. ("the beast")

Might also want to consider a Transgo SK-700 at the same time, set to one of the mild to medium modes (NOT "full race" or anything close to it); a new governor; a TV sleeve/bushing kit; a Vette servo or similar upgrade such as the Superior; and of course a torque converter.

If memory serves, the above site provides kits with various upgrades included.

I'll third Pro-built. He even sends detailed CD instructions on how to rebuild it and is more than willing to talk you through the rebuild if you give him a call. IN fact, sometimes it's hard to get him off the phone! haha

I am going to use the monster in a box kit. My neighbor rebuilds 700R4s and dose transmissions swaps for a living. I will see what he uses for kits its not the monster kit. He only spends like 250 or 300 on the kits he uses and there are some powerful motors in front of some of his transmissions. I have a great SA design book on 700R4s that I got from borders book store that would be great if you do your own rebuild. Should be easy to find on line. I would get a good book first and read it before getting a kit.

The kits at probuilt are totally worth the price. He includes way more parts than any other rebuild kits offer on the net. I am very happy with his custom assembled shift kit as well. Soft shifts @ low throttle angle and progressively harder as you open the throttle up. He also answers pretty much any question over the phone or on his messageboard.

You are right, sometimes I am a little slow on getting things out depending on how busy I am. I wear all the hats, so things do not always go as I would like them too. I still work most evenings, and you can call then if you want to except Thursday night a I am gone that evening.
