trans question

I have an 84 camaro z28 that I built a 400sbc for, it pushes 325 hp 400+ftlb torque :driving:. The car had a 350turbo when I bought it but I'd like to swap to a 700r4 but there aren't many people parting out a 3rd gen in my area right now but I also have an 86 chevy c10 that has a 700r4 in it. My question is will this transmission work? I have not looked to see if it has a long tail shaft or a short tail shaft but I can tell you my best guess is it has a long one being the truck is a long box. The 350turbo is doing me just fine right now but not having over drive on a longer road trip really kills the pocket book and limits the top speed by a long shot. Any tips or advice would help. :thanks:

Re: trans question

im pretty sure all 700r4s had the same length tail shaft. th350 had a long and short tail. only thing the truck wouldn't have is a torque arm mount like a thirdgen 700r4

Re: trans question

You know I did not think of that. My trans mount is goobered so I guess I should ask does the torque arm mount to the tranny or the crossmember?

Re: trans question

Mounts to the trannynin most case . I would highly recommend a cross member mounted torque arm tho. Spohn makes a nice tubular piece .

Re: trans question

A 2WD truck 700R4 has the right output shaft.

Bolting the F-body tailhousing on gives the torque arm mount. But, mounting it to the crossmember is a good idea.

Re: trans question

Getting an aftermarket torque arm setup that attaches the TA to the crossmember, instead of to the trans, is a TERRIFIC plan. Especially for a high-torque large CID motor. Frankly I'd be very surprised if a 400 would make as little torque as just 400 ft-lbs.

Re: trans question

Yeah with my set up I do believe it has 480 ft-lbs and the hack that put the 350th in welded the ta to the crossmember (idiot) so I wasn't sure. I have ordered the tail housing and a new crossmember for now I will probably be switching to a crossmember mounted ta later on. So another question for you guys is I have a b&m megashifter in the car now and it is for a 350th, I don't imagine there's a way to make it work with a 700r4 right?

Re: trans question

You could have used the tail housing from your old trans on the new one. Strait swap over. Just needs new seals.

I'm not real familiar with the Megashifter, but I know guys that are running 700's with it. It should just be a matter of hooking it up and making sure the shift points are good.

Re: trans question

if you bought a console mount b&M for a thirdgen there is a pin to remove allows it to be used with a 4speed auto.

Re: trans question

The tranny that is in the car now is a 350 turbo and that is what was in the car when I bought it so using the existing tail housing wasn`t going to work. Besides I found one for 40 bucks shipped. And if removing a pin is all i have to do this spring I will be set to improve mileage and top speed:driving:
