Which would be cheaper?

700r4 trans in my 86 camaro, the trans slips pretty bad when I slowly accelerate up to speed (traffic) and flawless when I gun it. So would it be cheaper to replace or rebuild it im gunna take it to a shop n if I do replace it I'd buy the trans myself and pay for labor

I would get it rebuilt if there's a reputable shop nearby. I don't know a whole lot about automatic transmissions but it sounds to me like you smoked a clutch pack. Maybe it's time to upgrade to better internals in your tranny, depending on where you're located. Best of luck.

I would be cheaper to find the trans and replace it your self but you get an unknown transmission.

Having the same thoughts and questions. My trans is working ok but I know now that I am driving it more that it is "tired".
I thought about a change over to a T5 but figure that will run $1000+ all said and done.
Also thought about buying one used but as Midas stated you never know what you will get. Everyone who has one says it worked great in the car.....
I saw an ad on Craigslist for Kellin Transmissions out of Delaware (they have a link to this site somewhere) who will do a base 700R4 rebuild for $650. Not sure of the details but I may seriously consider this as the cost is less than the alternatives or the risks. (a stick would certainly be more fun though).
