1987 Firebird Formula Transmission Fluid

I recently got a 1987 Firebird Formula that sat in the previous owner's garage for 13 years. (yeah part of that is still a mystery).

I found that there was transmission fluid leaking front of the pan. The fluid is now very low.

Question is: do I change the pan gasket and filter or just put new fluid in it and check for leaks?

Also, if i change the gasket and filter what is the recommended amount of fluid and type? Should I put some Lucas transmission fluid in as part of this?

Any help is appreciated!:hmmm:

The fluid is Dexron ATF. You can get it anywhere. From dead empty they take about 10 quarts. Pan drain only is about 4-6 depending on pan depth.

If I were you, I would just order up an aluminium pan kit. Gives greater cooling, larger capacity, and better gasket sealing. And yes get a filter kit for it.

Great input!

What about using a quart of Lucas with it?

I wouldn't use anything other than ATF unless there is some indication of a problem that you think may be addressed with a fluid modification.... ATF is VERY good at cleaning things and keeping them clean so it is unlikely that any additives are going to help. Depending on the mileage and condition the trans will either work after sitting for that long or it will fail in relatively short order. Mine had 149k on it, sat for 11 years, and lasted about 5k.

You should adjust the Throttle Valve cable before you drive it much after sitting that long. The cable sheath may have shrank and it can cause shifting issues.
