Axel lengths ? Looking to install Eaton 4.10 28 spline posi, need to know axel length. to purchase axels. |
Re: Axel lengths ? If this is a Gov-Lock aka Grenade-lock aka Gov-Bomb, I'd strongly recommend reconsidering. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...d-gov-lock.jpg A typical end-of-useful-service-life experience for those. If this is a 82-92 10-bolt, the axles are about 30-5/16" long. Best bet is to simply purchase stock replacement axles; don't get all wrapped up in "custom" ones for a stock application like that. |
Re: Axel lengths ? https://www.tomsdifferentials.com/20...ges134-151.pdf According to their catalog, third gen axles are 30-3/8" long. Left and right are the same length in a third gen. |
Re: Axel lengths ? I used these from summit https://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-700118/ Unfortunately if you are using them to upgrade from the 26 spline version they won't fit the rotors for iron calipers. They are about 0.300" too big and had to be turned down. |
Re: Axel lengths ? Hey, DiggerT, Welcome to TGO. The 10-Bolt FAQ sticky at the top of the page should provide answers for most questions. Best of luck on your project, JamesC |
Re: Axel lengths ? No damage to axel just wanted to go with 28 spline w/ Eaton posi and 4.10's |
Re: Axel lengths ? So your saying to stay with 26 spline I don't beat the car, has 300HP 305 just want more torque with the 4.10's. |
Re: Axel lengths ? No, I didn't say that. What I said was, if this "Eaton posi" is a Gov-Lock, which it sounds like you've got a line on a setup from a 90-up or thereabouts S truck since those sometimes come with that POS and those gears, you're making a mistake. There are other 28-spline axles that do fit disc rotors. I used Superior in my car but I don't think the ones I used are available any more. Alloy USA might fit, I've used those in other applications and they worked well. http://www.alloyusa.com/ |
Re: Axel lengths ? There is no way that I would go back with 26 spline axles if you are putting everything new in the rear end. |
Re: Axel lengths ? And as far as the exact length, it's probably ACTUALLY a metric value, not Imperial at all; 30-5/16" and 30-3/8" are VERY close together, obviously 1/16" apart, and probably represent the round-off precision chosen by different people to represent the same metric # before conversion. The "real" Imperial length might be closer to 30-43/128" or some such, if you cared to increase the "precision" to that degree. 771mm is somewhere between 30-5/16" and 30-3/8". "Measure with micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with axe." What we're all telling you is that even though 28-spline axles are a great idea and all that, a Gov-Lock is NOT. Get your 28-spline setup some other way. |
Re: Axel lengths ? Thanks for the input-the eaton I'm looking at is not a gov lock-wil go to 28 spline w/4.10's thanks again for the info. |
