Reusing 10 mile old ATF, but with a catch..

So here's the story. I rebuilt one of my 700r4, everything was going smoothly, I reassembled and and installed it onto the vehicle. Test driving It around I noticed it wasnt shifting properly. Well f*** me me right? I park and check the dip stick and the fluid on it is already almost black. Realizing I probably roasted my 3-4. How this happened was not due to clearance, (I checked it a good amount of times) it was that I forgot a thrust bearing on the inside of the input drum and it had snagged the circular spring loaded retainer on the piston and twisted it like a DNA cord.
Now to the point. I burned the 3-4 pack and contaminated all that deep, red, juicy, expensive goodness we call ATF, and turned it a dark black red color with a hint of burnt. Now the fluid itself has only maybe 10 miles on it, if that. I have poured a small amount on a paper towel and it at first stains black and if left to sit for maybe 10 mins it will dissipate and turn a red color with no sign of sludge or large material. You can see small specks of clutch material, and thats where i wanted to see if it was okay for reuseal. Let me know your input on this guys ,6 quarts at 9$ a bottle for dex 6 is up there.

Why do you need dex6?
You would be crazy to reuse it.

Well i ended up reusing it, had filtered it into a clean container through some panty hoes and ended up with about 3 quarts one went to top off the transfercase and the other two I reused inside of the 700r4 that i had replaced the 3 - 4 pack with 8 borg warner HE carbom frictions along with 8 more clean quarts of fluid. My dipstick says its over filled but i dont belive it. It was a dry case and that calls for 11+ quarts and i had filled 2 into the converter 2 "dirty" quarts of oil and 6 quarts of clean oil in the trans. If anything its low on fluid but i dont understand why it reads over filled. Im checking with the engine warm as it gets and it reads about an inch over the max mark. Maybe serious torque converter drainback? Unlikely because it is able to actuate gears almost instantly even if it has been sitting. Any ideas? No froth or milkshakyness on the dipstick.

Probably would have been better off putting in some cheap stuff to clean out all the crap and then put in new fresh stuff. You're probably going to wind up with issues in the short term unless you change it and the filter soon

Suggestion: buy 1 of these and install a full size oil filter on it. Tap it into the RETURN transmission fluid line. Use a filter with a fine micron rating and it should filter out most of the bad stuff.

:eek: Since there was NO third gen F body built with a "transfer case" I have two suggestions for you ;

#1 , find a forum dedicated to your vehicle , this forum ain't it .

#2 , that was the single most STUPID thing I've read here in the 6 years I've been a member , I don't care if it was $19 a quart instead of $9 , you phucked up big time reusing that burnt fluid and it WILL come back to bite your azz as I'll bet you your $9 a quart "savings" is gonna trash whatever poor transmission was unlucky enough to get what the recycling should have gotten instead .

I take my used oil out of the engine and use it for the rear end and it seems to work fine ........Jk

Actually on my 4WD GMC truck, I reuse the front differential gear oil in the rear diff, and just replace the rear. I hardly ever use 4WD and the oil comes out like new.

Thank you for all the replys everyone. But I am more than certain that everything will be fine. I thought most of you guys were familiar with rebuilding the transmissions, thats why i came here. Im fairly certain that 2 quarts of 10 mile old transmission fluid that had atomic clutch particals in it wouldnt affect it very much, due to the dilution of the contaminated fluid with clean fluid, and the filter picking up any remains my filtrations skills couldnt im fairly certain it will be fine for thousands of miles to come. That being said its only hydraulic fluid and uses fluid pressure to actuate gears, unlike a manual. The only issue i see to arise is a sticky valve in the valve body. Again thank you everyone except the fvgget trying to kick me off the forum.

:rolleyes: Not "trying to kick any idiot off of anything" , just trying to let the obviously truly clueless in on the reason why this forum is called ;

THIRD GEN . ORG F Body Discussion FORUM

And that's simply because POS hackjob crapboxes with "transfer cases" aren't in the scope of this forums discussion :lol:

So , IS the POS in question a third generation Camaro or Firebird ? No ? Well then maybe trying to find THE RIGHT FORUM to ask your questions may be the way to go , unless you've already been kicked off of the truck forums with your reused transmission fluid nonsense perhaps ??????

Easy solution, just ban any user with under 20 posts. Oh, wait...
