700r4 Lost 1st Gear Engine Braking

Hello
I've lost engine braking in 1st gear only
Trans Go Shift kit 2-3 in Manual configuration installed
Fluid is red
Lucas Additive in the pan
After the shift kit installation I had engine braking in all the gears. After 40 miles 1st gear freewheels

Anyone?
I've checked the fluid today and is not cherry red anymore...it's kinda pink but still clear and transparent.

Low reverse clutch pack is responsible for engine breaking. Might have an issue there.

Low reverse clutch pack is responsible for engine breaking. Might have an issue there. Did you rebuild it yourself?

I'm experiecing long delays in reverse gear engaging when cold.
2nd and 3rd gear have engine braking as normal

you need to pull out the shift kit and find the problem you created.

When my 700 did that, (no engine braking in manual 1st) it was the low/reverse sprag. It's the one way clutch that provides engine braking in manual 1st. Might also explain the reverse issue you're having. They break. Mine failed right after a rebuild and shift kit install. Could have been my driving habits. Could have been poor assembly. After another rebuild, that trans lasted almost forever.

Forward Sprag

EDIT: Didn't see that this thread was from April. Hope the OP has it figured out.

If you are having problems now with it. It sounds like you have lost the low reverse clutch pack. When you have it apart, I will give you some help as to how to prevent this from happening again. Was the valve body (since this is a 1987 unit) the first design GM or second design GM valve body?

I solved the problem:
Added a bottle of Lucas Trans Slip fix, installed a Corvette Servo and now it shifts perfect with engine braking in all the gears

Lucas Trans Slip fix is a very bad idea... :(
