good 0-60

Whats a good 0-60 for a 91 camaro rs 3.1? just counting in my head i got 8 seconds.

Keoki_Firebird89 03-18-2003 08:57 AM

i've been with my 2.8 like 8 seconds, i don't know exactly what tho... and i definitely don't know with my 3.4. I believe 8-9 is about what our v6s are supposed to do.

Nixon1 03-18-2003 01:08 PM

Stock is in the 10-11 second department generally. Sticks can generally net low 10's, maybe high 9's...the autos are more like 10.5-11. 3.1's are going to be slightly lower #'s naturally..the 5 hp and 15 ft/lbs help.

My V6 ran a G-Teched 8.28 with a 16.48 @ 85 quarter mile with these modifications: K&N filter with can removed, Catco High Flow cat, Dynomax Super Turbo Catback, new dist. cap and rotor, Taylor 8mm wires and Rapidfire plugs.

It was an auto 3.1 btw.

inittab 03-18-2003 06:05 PM

does the can removed help that much?

84TAProject 03-18-2003 07:08 PM

My carbed 2.8 ran an 11.4 to 60 on my g-tech, but the road wasnt perfect, and the cars state of tune at that point was questionable. But Id say 11 flat on a perfect day with that car. I mean, *** I lost to a near stock civic today. Pulled at the bottom of each gear, but he eventually passed me. Loser probably thinks he toasted a Z28.

devianb 03-18-2003 07:17 PM

If I could get my 2.8l to get a 0-60 in 6.9 seconds or less, I would be very satisfied. Right now my 0-60 is about 8.5 seconds and slower. I don't mind it much though. I like my thirdgen the way I like the old Beetles, the engines are inadequate but you still love the car nonetheless.

inittab 03-18-2003 07:57 PM

what can i do to get a better 0-60?
im planning on putting headers on whenever i get some extra $$$ right now i have a catco super flow cat, dynomax super turbo catback system, k&n air filter and a general tuneup

devianb 03-18-2003 08:18 PM

I don't think there is much you can do with out doing some internal work like cam, rockers, pulleys, porting and polishing.

inittab 03-18-2003 08:24 PM

aka too much money to waste on a v6 =P

Well, I am not going to say that. If you want to go faster than 16's in the 1/4 mile without NOS then yes it would be waste. If you are like me and don't mind your car never going to be as fast as a 5.0 and just want to make the V6 a little faster, then no I don't think it is a waste.

inittab 03-18-2003 09:08 PM

rough estimate how much would what you just said cost?

devianb 03-18-2003 09:23 PM

LOL, I haven't done it yet myself, but I am planning on it. I can't really say how much it would cost.

If I had to guess I would say around $800 because I know a few people that got thier V6 bored with a port and polish, cam, timing chain, and other neccessary parts for a rebuild for that price.

If someone else has done it, you can tell me different.

Nixon1 03-18-2003 10:16 PM

init..the can removal helps decently, but the FILTER ARM removal helps a LOT. A custom setup that has smooth bends and angles in it with a good conical on the end will gain quite a bit over stock. That arm is much more terrible than it looks.

inittab 03-18-2003 10:58 PM

it did look alot more decent than the one on my firebird, just fabricate one or would summit have a nice one?

Nixon1 03-19-2003 10:29 AM

To my knowledge, no one makes aftermarket CAI's for our car, but they're insanely simple..most fabricate them out of PVC. Get some rubber connections and some PVC and a conical and make a little arm. Or you can try to rig up some sort of import setup, such as the Autozone or Discount Auto Parts ones...but that might be a tad tricky to get them to sit right or fit in the right area.

1986CamaroSC 03-19-2003 02:57 PM

my 2.8 ran 0-60 in like 8.xx seconds iwth just a dynomax catback

V6sucker 03-19-2003 06:24 PM

How about 4.5 sec?

4 cyl.
turbo.
LARGE intercooler.
5 speed.
IRS.
4/W Disk brakes.
Black leather interior.

V6camaroman 03-19-2003 08:57 PM

my firebird should be runnin somewheres in the mid to high 7 sec range im thinking. man i wish i had a g-tech

<img src="http://images.cardomain.com/installs/192000-192999/192436_84_full.jpg">

It is the stock one, i just painted it,

Nixon1 03-20-2003 07:22 PM

Nice paintjob! It almost looks aftermarket except for the EXHAUST sticker slapped in the middle of it! ;)

Sorry man..I'm just giving you a hard time. You did do a damn nice job painting it though...wish my chrome jobs came out like that. Can't get it to stick worth a crap..and if it does, it bubbles or puddles on me.

BTW..your car is damn clean!

thanks thats the way i like to keep it, now if i could get started on this swap.. i have a TH350 already picked up, i just need to find a motor now and i'll be laughing, at least she's indoors this winter and not out like this again

Nixon1 03-20-2003 07:34 PM

Wow...did you just start it then?? The tailpipe smoke sure isn't much for it being that cold out! Once it got down to like 30-40 degrees here, my Camaro poured smoke like a Ford with a bad head gasket and half of its cylinders missing piston rings... :D

1986CamaroSC 03-20-2003 07:40 PM

yeah it wasnt running long then... it barely smoked at all, never puffing the blue, can't say the same for the damn golf though, she's always smokin':D

Nixon1 03-20-2003 08:16 PM

Well mine never puffed blue..but it poured enough grey smoke to fill the entire street when it was cold out. Never puffed ANY smoke of ANY color when warm though! I was very proud of that when I sold it... About the Golf...well, it's your beater...who cares? Run thicker oil, put some Rislone in there, and be done with it. ;)

thats the part i'm waiting for, although she is a quick little beast, i'
m after beating newer golfs, V6 Z24s, it has little torque down low

Nixon1 03-20-2003 08:26 PM

Quick huh?? All be damned... ;) Friend of mine had a 3 cyl 5 spd Daihatsu Charade..thing was damn jumpy 1st and 2nd gear! Once it started picking up speed though it was slow as all hell. That 5 speed was geared pretty mean down low.

1986CamaroSC 03-20-2003 08:28 PM

yeah thats the way the vw is, it gets to 180km/h, like 115mph at 6000 in 5th

Nixon1 03-20-2003 08:29 PM

This one was loaded down with him, me, and one other person..it hit like 50 and didn't wanna move....it was trying sooo hard but those 3 cylinders just weren't enough!

hahahah, thats gold, must be one of the tiniest cars too, with 3ppl in the golf you can go like 175, weight doesnt affect it too much, so it seems, I just cant wait to be crusin in the maro again

Nixon1 03-20-2003 08:36 PM

Yeah that car was small as hell. They didnt put power steering on them. Too small....they didnt really need it. It was a trip. Had a great clutch though...really enjoyable to drive...it was nice and feathery, easy to work..not too firm. Great for an amateur like me.

1986CamaroSC 03-20-2003 08:41 PM

yeah, those clutches are easy to drive, mechanical too i bet, when i went from driving a mech, clutch to a hydaulic setup it was quite the transition, but now i can drive any stick... although i havent tried any stage 3 racing clutches yet:D

Nixon1 03-20-2003 09:01 PM

Try driving the clutch on a 4 speed Ford Pinto...that's an experience right there.... ;) That was my first stickshift to successfully operate. My favorites, based on ease of use and the pedals, were that Daihatsu, and this 80-something Mazda B2000 pickup.

I tried an 88 5.0 Mustang with a short-throw shifter and racing clutch once! I had no problem driving it slow, but trying to drive it fast, I couldn't get it into 2nd! I hit neutral and couldnt find the damn 2nd gate it was so solid and notchy! After like 4 seconds of wiggling, shaking, and cursing, I kicked it into 2nd and grannied it up to him as he was laughing his *** off!

Internal Mods

I just bought and Edelbrock cam, intake base and 4 barrel top for my 2.8. I haven't installed it, but its supposed to put out like 230 ponies. I've also had it bored .060, Accel 8.8 wires, Bosch Platinum +4 plugs, Edelbrock Performer Series Carb, 3" exhaust (with no cat), and a K&N filter.

inittab 03-21-2003 01:47 AM

pfft wish mine had that intake

soccrkid64 03-21-2003 01:53 AM

Edelbrock

The manifold base is like $130 and the top is around $90, but then you have to get a carb

inittab 03-21-2003 02:03 AM

no way to rig to a auto eh?

yeah, but you'll need a cowl inducton hood

inittab 03-21-2003 05:57 PM

cowl induction eh, maybe when i get some extra money, i was talking to a dude at summit last night and he said slp made something for our cars any ideas?

soccrkid64 03-22-2003 01:03 AM

nope, no idea

krazycracka55 03-22-2003 02:06 AM

tru tru i run at 60.somewhat mph in the 1/8 and i hit 11.20 something everytime. ive since added a hiflow cat, holley ignition module and a 50,000 volt coil and havent made it out to the track yet :(

TekViper 03-22-2003 09:07 PM

hmm i think theres something wrong with my engine. just counting in my head, my 0-60 time was around 11seconds. im not sure if the road i was on was perfectly flat or not tho. i timed it from a complete dead stop. i'll try again with a stopwatch, adrenaline probably caused me to count faster or something.

Nixon1 03-22-2003 11:53 PM

Tek...you have any modifications? That time sounds on-par with a stock one of our cars in decent tune.

TekViper 03-22-2003 11:55 PM

no real mods, just 2.5in exhuast, "high flow cat", and a mieneke flowmaster clone. and regulare tuneup stuff like cap, rotor, spark plugs and wires. planning on scraping my rusted old air canister and making a pvc intake tube with K&N air filter, will that help at all?

Nixon1 03-23-2003 12:33 AM

In one word: Yes!
