Using a V8 T5 behind the V6... what clutch?
 
Tranny started making noise... think it's the input shaft bearing. Ugh.

Since I'm planning on pulling my 2.8 for a V8 come spring I really don't want to buy a V6 T5... especially since I have a WC V8 T5 for my swap in the shed.

Everything should bolt up fine but I know the V6 clutch disk won't work as it's the wrong spline.

The V8 clutch disk is too big for the V6 clutch/flywheel.

So I need a V8 splined V6 sized disk... read something about mid 90's S10's with the 4 cylinder being the correct one?

And yes, I do realize the 1st gear ratio is going to knock my acceleration a bit... but this motor only needs to be in there a few more months!!

Pretty sure that v8 trans will not bolt up.

As Pillsbry10 said, the trans cases themselves are different. IIRC the V6 uses a Ford style bolt pattern to mate to the bellhousing, where as the (GM) V8 uses a different pattern.

It would likely also be cheaper to buy another V6 T5 than a clutch to make your V8 T5 work.

Is it just the noise that is causing you to want to swap it out? If so, just leave it, it'll likely last the few months you need it to, if not longer. All of my T5s *coughjunkcough* :P lol have made noise and rattled and carried on and even with beating on them they still worked for a long while.

Are you guys sure? I've read plenty of people who've done this without issue.

Only difference is the input shaft spline count. Mounting points are the same.

This noise came on fast and loud. I've been through enough T5's over the years to know when it's going to grenade!

Ya know its been a long time since I researched this. Auto won't swap but with manual I think you would have to use v6 bell housing for sure. Cant remember if the holes on bell housing trans side is the same v6 and v8. Splines are also an issue.

I knew the spline count was different but thought that was it.

If the tranny to bellhousing mounts are different, how do V8 guys run the V6 tranny? I know it isn't a popular thing to do, but I know many have!

swap the bellhousing. it will bolt up just fine. Can't help you with the clutch question

your bigger problem is the 1st gear on a v8 car is MUCH longer than the v6 t5. it will be difficult to get the car moving. It will be like starting in 2nd every single time. you're going to burn your clutch

That too...there was a thread on the clutch issue years ago but I cant find it. Id bet you can find or just rebuild the v6 one pretty cheap.

Maybe it depends on the year, but there was definitely a difference in bolt pattern (to the bellhousing) between V6 and V8.

Also most people that leave the V6 trans in, use an adapter plate and use the V6 bellhousing from what I have seen, or use a swap bellhousing specifically. Fitting a clutch disc for a V6 trans behind a V8 is pretty easy, because the clutch disc is smaller in diameter than the V8 pressure plate, going the other way is not as easy.

I'm going to put a 4th gen V6 T5 in my friend's '91 2.8L S10 using the 2.2L S10 bellhousing.

I encouraged a V8 swap long ago, but he went with the 3400 GMPP crate engine, so it's going to be a V6 T5.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing what you end up doing with the clutch.

Be careful with pilot bearing engagement.

And if anyone has awesome starter / passenger side chassis pics of your 2800/3100/3400 third gen or S10, I'd like to see them.

just so you know, the shifter will not be in the right spot when using a t5 from a fbody on a truck. You can't use a blazer t5 on a camaro for the same reason

You may run into a spline issue with that idea as well. Im not at home or id look it up. I couldnt use a 4th gen trans on my third gen when i did my swap

I'm familiar with shifter location, VSS/speedo gear relocation, and tailhousing swaps, including slinger & oiling. I have built enough T5/T56s to know what to do there.

The 4th gen T5 maindrive is 26 spline; no different than GM V8 T5.

My concerns about the 2.8/3.1/3.4 (since I'm a SBC guy) are the input lengths (think I have it figured out; gotta assure pilot bearing depth,)
and starter clearance at the frame (gotta determine clearance for the starters I wanna try; a cone-less pinion will probably get it done),

I'll try not to divert your thread any more. But 2.8 rear main seal / crank pics, or some of the starter area would be appreciated.
