TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator 1987 Firebird 2.8L V6 Several years ago and about 17,000 miles, I replaced the 2.8L (173cid) short block with a stroked 3.4L (207 cid) from A.R.I in Kansas City (direct swap for 2.8L). At that time, I had the heads rebuilt, installed a Crane Street Performer cam, roller rockers, double roller cam chain, reduction pulleys, B&M transmission kit. Ran great until the fuel injection problems hit. This summer I converted my 3.4L TPI to a Carburetor. The car runs like never before. Stomp on the line, and burn 'em down. Stomp at 20MPH, and she starts spinning those Goodyears. Second and third gear shifts chirp. WOT lays you back in the seat nicely. With all the changes I have made, I am guessing right at 190HP, but have not dynod yet. if anyone is interested, I have documented the changes I made here: https://gmv6-tpi-to-carb.com |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator have any videos? |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator I had a 3.4 built by ARI too , but I didn't see an option for a stroked engine. Did you get this custom ordered? |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator Maybe I'll get some done next spring. |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator If you look at their web site, http://www.engine-parts.com/GMV6/gm2834stkr.html Pro-Builder® GM 2.8L Stroker Engine Available in 3.1L and 3.4L Displacements |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator Sweeeeeeeeeeet. |

Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator a post on fullthrottle v6 says technically it is 204.8in. I'm not trying to be smart, just wondering if you had it over-bored or not. |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator My bad, 207 |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator you 've don'e what I almost did a while back. I had megasquirt put on my car but the intake manifold for MPFI just doesn't flow well. I only dyno'd 110 whp and 160 ft lbs STD corrected on a dynocom dyno. |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator If you got 110, you lost power. All I can say is my engine now has way more power and is more responsive than before. It's not even close. If you read the write up, I not only put a carb on, I changed intake, ignition, cam, roller rockers, reduction pulleys, cat back and used a carb matched to the size of the engine. |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator Nothing special, just their advertised 3.4L short block, which according to their spec sheet is 207cid. |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator My memory was off, I should have said 207 CID, I did the swap many years ago.. I just looked up on my paper work from ARI, and it is listed at 207CID. |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator Yes I had a comp 260h cam, 1.6 roller tip rockers , and pacesetter headers with no cat. idk how I dynod 110. |

How did that happen. Stock is 140hp ? |
Re: TPI 2.8L/3.4L to Carburator Yes dr. dave. however, my car was dynotuned with megasquirt ii. I believe I might have had a misfire going on, and my old muffler was probably clogged. But it did make a good torque number. |
