92 camaro rear spacer question I've searched and have not found a definitive answer to my question. I have the 16" Z28 rims on my 92 and I was curious as to the spacers on the rear... Got tires installed today and they said they shouldn't work on the car cause of the spacers... I've had 3 92 Camaros and all of them have had these spacers on the rear yet no one I talk to knows anything about it. My buddy had a 91 with the same rims but no spacers (unless they were removed by previous owner). Maybe someone can clarify this for me... Are these spacers specific to 91-92's or they only came with certain packages or what? |
Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question I have a 92Z as well and I was just outside messing around with my rear tires because i had wheel wobble....lo and behold i removed the spacers and the wobble disappeared....can you beleive that? Another question is....do i really need these spacers? They are currently off of the vehicle and it runs fine to me...just want to make sure it's not an issue having them off. |

Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question What spacers? The .030" OEM slip-on ones? Only seen those on the 82-84 aluminum drum cars. Run them or don't. Won't made any difference, unless yours are the cause of a wobble like what msmithgar had. Gives your lug nuts a bit more thread engagement, but they are fine with the spacers on as well. |
Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question If my 1992 car had them, they're long gone, cause I haven't seen them in the 5+ years I've owned the car, and I've had no issues without them for over 40,000 miles now. |
Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question Thanks for the clarification guys. I just find it funny that the guy was arguing with me about the spacer and that they don't wanna work on the car cause it's a liability issue. I tried to tell him that it's OEM but he didn't believe me. Said he never saw a third gen with spacers. Oh well. Thanks again. |
Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question It is too bad that that appear to be a Discontinued Item at GM, or we could link you to a GM site with them for you to show him & prove him wrong, beyond a shadow of a doubt. IIRC, GM & a part # are cast into the back of them, proving they are OEM parts. If I am correct, there certainly would be no reason for them to be idiots & question the spacers. I still have a bag for one of mine, which is how I had the part # so at-hand, but no picture of the spacer inside it. |
Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question Take the fellow a Chilton's manual, turn to page 8-2 and show him the diagram for verification that the spacer exists and was used: "Wheel Spacer is used with the 16 x 8 alum wheel with cast iron brake drums only." Not exactly true as the FAQ points, but.... JamesC |
Re: 92 camaro rear spacer question That .187 thick spacer used on the rear with IROC 16x8 wheels was like a hit and miss thing. I had them on my car and sold them when I changed to rear disc's. Needed, that is a good question??? My opinion, is when the Aluminum drums were dropped a Engineer filled that .187 extra space on the drawings with a spacer to keep everthing Kosher. |
