What is the stock tire size on my 86 supposed to be?

Hello all. My 15 year old tires are finally worn out and need to be replaced. The size that was on the car when I bought it are 235/60-15. The fronts happen to rub a tiny bit on the inner fender when the steering is at the lock. This makes me think that they aren't supposed to be there, and I should be running 215/65-15 tires instead, which as it turns out are more plentiful around here and quite a bit cheaper. I've googled the web a bit, and haven't found concrete evidence as to what the OE tire size was for the car. Can I get this from the RPO codes?

Wheels / car in question:
(Are these the 15x7 or 15x8 rims?)

235/60/15 is one possible size, but it depends which equipment package was ordered. Check out this link:

Look at the side wall of the tire and it tells you the size of the wheel, they changed the wheels from 14" to 15" in 86 on the Camaro but I'm not positive about the Fire bird.. If they are the same then stock should be 15" x 7" wheals all around and I run the 235/60r15s on my 7" wheels front and 255/60r15 on a 8" rear wheel .The fronts on mine rube a little bit on the side as yours do(at full turn) but "IMO" not enough to justify running a much thinner front tire. When your at the tire shop set the two tires next to each other and you will see the difference. The more tire on the pavement the better the grip on the road.

The catalog I have from 86 states that P235/60VR15 were not available for the SE.So that would be the reason their rubbing. It does state that P215/65R15 were standard for the SE.
Check the sticker on the drivers side door for your tire size or your RPO code list. Also 15" Diamond Spoke Aluminum Wheels were standard on the SE in 86.
Those wheels in the pic are the optional Deep Dish 15" Hi-Tech Turbo Aluminum Wheels 7"

'86 sport coupe 15x7 rally wheels wore p215/65/15 tires, the berlinetta used p205/70R14s

Ok, so the 215/65-15 makes some sense as being the original size with the rubbing issues. Now, since I drive the thing about 1,000 miles / year, I see no need to pick up expensive 60,000 miles tires since they'll crack long before I melt the tread off... That being said, are there any inexpensive tires that I should actually stay away from? I see Falken, Kuhmo, Yokohama, General and the likes on the discount tire web sites. I'd really love to put fat BFGs back on it, but it just doesn't make financial sense at this point...
