Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T ???
 

Has anyone actually used this tire ?
I like that it also has a black wall option .
Just the fact it comes in "very" hard to find sizes for us 15" tire guys is nice.

Any thoughts, opinions , comments......

I have done quite a bit of reading over the last few days about Mickey Thompson.
It amazed me at how these guys have invested over 50 years into tire development and are top in their class.
They are still manufacture in the U.S.A.

You don't see them around here so I guess that says it all.

I know a couple of people that run those on older classics (chevelle and a nova). Seems to be a good street tire.

Prob is they are harder to get. In the sense you must order them on line, or go to a speed shop and have them order em' for you, etc etc. I have yet to see a normal tire shop stock these and in fact, most can't even get them. So your stuck ordering online, playing shipping, hauling them and you wheels (or car) to a tire shop and having them mounted.

I don't have a prob with that (all of my tires for last 10 years has been bought online) but I know alot of folks won't go for that.

I totally agree with that.

First my car is a DD street car setup to run the staggered tires with old school look. I have a wheel size that's hard to find tires for. The Rears in 255/60r15s.

I'm ready to put a different brand of tire on my car than what I have been running from the beginning of my build. 8 years now.

Mickey Thompson is offering a all season street tire that is built in the U.S.A. and it has a black wall I can use. Their reputation for making the finest street legal drag radials tire and there top of the line pro drag tires is appealing to me. I don't think I will have a problem with their name on there.

I started looking for them just the other day and you do have to order them.

I have 3 shops that are affiliated with Mickey Thompson here and they can get them.

The tread looks like it belongs on a truck but so do the other all seasons I've looked at.
The BF Goodrich radial t/a is out of the question. A nice tire for what I'm doing but way over used .

Cobras . They have worked well for me but that's the tire I have now. The rest I could find in a 255/60r15 are on the economy list.

I'm just tired of the Cobras and want a change..........

Nice looking car Ron!

I love the staggered tire setups. When mine was a DD I had 235/60 and 255/50-15 on it. Now more as a strip, weekend toy I still have the 235/60-15 up front but 275/60-15 out back.

It's getting hard to find any good 15's now. When I bought mine 8-10 years ago, everybody had 15's in the 235, 245, 255, 275 / 60-15 sizes.. Now only a handful has them.

I would run the M/T street tires, I know and trust M/T tires.

I also have the 235/60R15s up front.

You definitely need a certain look to pull it off, and I think my car can do it.
I believe I will give them a try, but the Cobras have some tread left so it will be a little while before I buy them.

i have their 295's on the rear. no complaints. its been awhile but i think its still free shipping from jegs.

Have you looked at the MT SRs? They make a 26x8 and a 26x10. I think they would look really nice.

That is a beautiful tire. If I had a 400 hp car that will spend some time at a track maybe, but
not for my little 5.0 DD.

Besides they are $ 233.00 EA

Even though I have heard that comment made about some of the All Season tires I still should not have mentioned it. I like the tread pattern on the M/T Sportsman S/T or I would not even consider it.
Very aggressive.

The more I look at them the more I want to chuck the Cobras and buy them now.

I really like the STs also. Never been a fan of the Cobras. Sell your Cobras, Maybe get 150-200 bucks for them and help with the ST purchase.

The American Racing AR-23 Wheels I have only came in 3.75 BS in 15in. wheel.
The fronts are 235/60r15s on 7" wide wheels with 255/60r15s on 8" wide wheels rear.

The photos in that thread show it all.

Ron I read that MT and Cobra's are made in the same factory...
Then I found that in 2003 Cooper purchased Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels.

The tread is very similar... you may be paying a lot more $$$ for the name... Just FYI...

Really nice tire but in the size I would want is $ 256.99 ea.

A while ago I posted that Mickey Thompson had been bought by Cooper.

This is true but I'm hoping that they will allow M/T to continue making tires there way and in the U.S.A.

Trust me I will be doing a thorough investigation on the subject.

I'm already on a first name basis with a M/T tech. named Mike.

The same guy that went into the warehouse to take photos of the tire then send them to my by E Mail.

I never pushed them hard in the rain but I did get caught in a serious downpour on the interstate at 65/70mph. They felt solid to the ground and responded well with lane changes.

With a 3.42 ratio and the hard compound of the Cobra (softens up when hot)
I have to feather the car off the line or they will spin a bit when wet.

I think any car with that ratio or higher with all season tires will experience the same.

OK,
I just got off of the phone with a M/T tech and I asked him several questions.

= M/T has two plants and both are here in the U.S.A.
= M/T s plants produce M/T tires as they always have.
= Cooper has plants all over the world and Cobras are produced in a few of those sites.
= The compound in the M/T S/Ts and Cobra are different.
= M/T has incorporated a little Strip compound into the S/T.

I do like the MT sidewall better, less cluttered...
But I'll using black side, like you :)
I'll be getting a new set of tires in the next year, post a review if you do before I :) They're only about an extra $100 more than Cobras for a set...

The going price in general is $122.00 each for the 235/60r15 and $134.00each for the 255/60r15 in the M/T s/t.

I had American Tire price match "Discount Tire Direct" prices when I bought the cobras and will do the same with the M/T's

A lot of the big on line stores and places like American Tire don't list the Cobra or M/T s/t's on line. You must call them and ask about the tires.

Buy the way the Cobra was just being used on a DD and the M/T s/t are going to do the same.
I don't take it to the track or push the tires hard.
I like to have a little fun once and a while but that's getting harder and harder to do in the city.

I'm only changing the tires because I'm tired of the Cobras look. I have ran that tire for 8 years now and want a change.

The exterior of my car is done so the only thing I can change is the tires and the ONLY other tire I will consider is the M/T s/t. ( the M/T s/t just happen to have a few perks I like.)

Not that I would need it but there is no tread wear rating for the tire.

That's a wild looking tire.
checking out M/T's website, I'm guessing it's a standard compound? Not like their street radials.

I just called Discount Tire direct, and they said they do not sell Mickey Thompson tires. It would be nice to buy them from a place that offers road hazard warranty. Let me know if you guys run across one.

Sorry but the online store is "Discount Tire" no Direct on the end.
Any way they are directly associated with American Tire so American tie honors there on line price.

I called Discount Tire today (Saturday) so he will get back to me on Monday.

Les Schwab tire center can get them locally along with a few dealers here locally.

Yes, just a mildly sticky street compound. I think they are 300 tread wear range, with a H speed rated(135) vs the 118 mph rating of the S/T. They hook pretty dang good on a 427 BBC pro-street Vette a friend's dad owns.

The tread looks very similar...
On the edges... the Cobra has more channels to evacuate water, thus less cornering grip..
The MT has less channels (more rubber)... so a bit worse than the Cobra for evacuating water but better grip while turning...

In rain / wet conditions, I never had any problems with the Cobra's up front, but I had issues with the rear end (the rear end / brakes themselves) and I did get sliding braking & takeoff, which I attributed some to that... (has since been fixed)
But dry weather, I had no problems with the Cobras...

I did find a couple of online order places, both offer free shipping and road hazard warranties for a few more $$$...

I would rather my tire said Mickey Thompson on it than Cooper Cobra...
I have read of a few people not being able to balance a new MT's...
Other than those 2 reviews, every one was happy with traction, cornering, quiet, etc...

Who ever get's a set of these MT ST's, please throw up a review... and in wet conditions too...

I have there 275-60-15 for the rear and 215-70-15 for the front. I bought them for an old 77 monte carlo so the back spacing might be wrong and I might have to buy new rims. I have only drove 100 miles on them so I cant comment on there grip or ware. I do like the looks of them though. I got them so I could drive in the rain and still have some grip. Just based off of looks and price I would totally get another set. I think my back were $156 and the fronts were $125 but I bought them about 2 years ago.
