Sounds like you have resistance in the ignition to starter circuit. My '88 did the same thing. I hooked up a push button start for those occasions that it won't start.

Disconnect the vacuum hose from the FPR, start the engine, and wait about a minute and a half. If fuel comes out of the FPR port replace the diaphragm, if not leave it alone.

In my '88 Bird it was resistance in the ignition wires. I put in a push button start as a backup when it wont start. The shutting off off does sounds like an ICM fault.

The lobes on the camshaft have to be in the up position, or at least ones nearest the front of the engine. They were binding with the pan when I tried to remove mine.

Try rotating the crankshaft, after marking the dizzy spot. Mine was stuck as well on something, rotated the shaft, and it fell out by itself.

Fuel pressure regulator? Ruptured diaphragm-pull vacuum hose from FPR for a couple of minutes while running and see if fuel leaks out.

Have you checked your timing? I had hesitation issues with my '88 when I first got it, checked and reset timing, ran better afterwards.
