Mine did that with a hollowed out cat, but there was enough restriction from black soot in the rear muffler from a rich condition (caused by various other fun stuff) that the jerkiness almost felt...

When you get some light, go outside and push the secondary air doors down, on the hinge you will see a little plastic cam, if operating properly it should lift up the secondary metering rods - good...

There is a large Black plastic/Bakelite round choke on the side of the carb. loosening and rotating one way increases the effect of the choke (sounds like thats what he has done) the other decreases...

mine looked a lot like this, had endless connectivity issues and the pickup coil was stuffed in the end. They really arent that expensive considering how much work they do and how long they last.

if youve converted to carb then youll have a very simple setup for distributor. connect a 12v wire from your battery to the distributor. should turn over and start. Once confirmed, disconnect.
