T56 speedo fix for mechanical thirdgen. Dakota digital Dak-ecd-100-2
I recently had put in a t56 with viper internals and the upgraded main shaft. I debated doing the tails haft conversion but wasn't sure if it would work with a larger main shaft. Didn't like the idea of cable x boxes with the reviews it has on here. I was going to do a gps speedo but wanted to keep the factory look and cruise control. When I happened to find out about Dakota Digital box and didn't see many reviews but no bad ones so I gave it a try.
I have an 88 Iroc that I installed this on so get the clip on cable since this hooks directly to your speedo. It comes with 30" cable so long enough to install near the fender under the hood. 4 wires total. Red is switch one power, black is ground, white is vehicle speed wire. The t56 has two wires off sensor one goes to the white wire and the other the same ground as the unit.Doesn't matter polarity to this unit!! Next is the green wire that is for the calibration switch. Other side of the switch goes to the ground. I ran mine inside the car but for simplicity you could have it ran outside into the window just to do the calibration then leave under the hood.
Unit seems as smooth as factory. Before I calibrated it the speedo was showing 145at probably 30mph and was steady/smooth at running that speed. To calibrate the instructions are simple but where I mounted it I couldn't see the light indictor on the unit. So I did hold the button longer than expected to enter calibration set up. I used my running app for the gps to do a measured mile and my speedo is almost perfect first try. Seems a couple miles an fast but I'd rather leave it like that and maybe help me avoid getting ticket lol
Would be nice if unit was a little smaller or had better mounting points bur still not bad as is. As long as this unit lasts I'll be happy. Will post if I have any issues in the future. But enjoyed driving the car to work without having to use gps and worry about lag getting me a ticket!

Here a pic zipped tied with a cloth under the unit to stop from scratching paint. Will probably try to figure out a neater look later

Thanks for the feedback of the DD box. Looking to use one for an LS Monte Carlo SS swap. Like you haven't heard anything bad, but haven't heard any "Real" feedback.

I bought that for my 69 truck. I haven't used it long and I mounted in the cab, it is really loud when operating, the loud whirring from the cable spinning

Thanks Scooter. Is the DD box you have a new one? I heard they changed it and it's suppose to run quieter? If not would probably want to leave it in the engine bay.

I got part number ECD-100-1, from summit about a year ago, so I am not sure. Its not like loud loud, but I can hear it over the road noise quite easily and I have large holes in the floor, lol

Re: T56 speedo fix for mechanical thirdgen. Dakota digital Dak-ecd-100-2
@Scooter did you grease the speedo cable? When I first got my Camaro it also made a loud whirring from the cable spinning, pulled the dash and cable applied a little white grease and no more whirring. Obviously that won't make a difference if the noise is from the electric motor that spins the cable not the cable itself.

Re: T56 speedo fix for mechanical thirdgen. Dakota digital Dak-ecd-100-2
Somehow I never saw the reply. I did not grease the cable, but that is a good idea as the noise is likely from the cable inside the tube. I also have the cable in a loop from directly behind the cluster in the truck, it is a ticght path, but the cable spun freely, but it is lielky rubbing more than if I have it in a more straight path. I never fixed anything, the needle fell off the speedo since I never calibrated it and now the truck is broken until I do my frame swap, so greasing the cable won't happen for a while, and since I have to replace the floor and do other stuff I may move the box, weld some studs to the firewall instead of a bracket on the brake/steering column bracket.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm slow to progress. So I finally got my Dakota Digital ECD-100 and was wondering what i connect the white wire to, where you guys were getting your VSS signal from, are you just splicing into the wiring before it goes to the ECM i have a 2002 ECM, LS1/T56 combo

So you'll have to wire the DD box to the VSS on the transmission

Re: T56 speedo fix for mechanical thirdgen. Dakota digital Dak-ecd-100-2
That converts the output of the VSS to what you need it to be, this box drives the mechanical gauge in the dash. This is configurable to output proper calibration, there is a process, but it will drive the dash. I had it hooked up in my truck to the NV4500 in my 69 C10. Worked for about 5 seconds before the needle fell off the cluster since I didn't get to calibrate it yet. Eventually I will get it all fixed again

Yes, but they do very different things.
Much more expensive than the drive box. I had that done on a T56 too, haven't used it though.

hey I have a 87 camero and how would I run the module on the 4L6E transmission do I need to hook anything to transmission if using the OBD200 module does that mean I don’t have to hook anything up to transmission or only the wires in the instructions for set up

Re: T56 speedo fix for mechanical thirdgen. Dakota digital Dak-ecd-100-2
You need to hook the wires to the module and do a calibration per the instructions. If you have a trans that is ecu shift controlled you need to connect it to the ecu also.
