Carb air filter that works with old TPI air filter housing
I switched to carb and some people have been saying you can modify your old TPI setup to work with a carb.
Is this true? Or anything you can buy that looks close to a stock TPI setup?

I don't see how you would, or what the benefits would be?
The TPI look comes from the runners. You can't replicate that.

I made my own. Used a reproduction L88 drop base, a moroso top and some sheet metal to adapt it to the TPI filter system. I wish I had some photos...but it was pretty easy to do. It made a good cold air induction system.

There are a couple of ways to go about depending on where you want your filtering to be or the look you're trying to achieve.
Option one: You can buy an aftermarket filter case from the likes of http://www.ramairbox.com/
and adapt it to the TPI filter housing that mounts over the rad. The twin filters are excluded from the TPI housing and it's used as a means to bring cold air in.
This is a Firebird however the idea is the same. Get a single snorkel housing from the aftermarket and adapt it to the TPI filter case.
Option two: Use the TPI filter housing with the twin filters and adapt it to a carb hat.
I have an example buried here somewhere. I look for it and post later.

That does work. One of the members (I don't recall who) built a CAI system using a carb hat and the TPI filter housing. It was a simple matter a some silicone couplings to join the two.

Curious. Have they gone out of business? It's been a long since I was at their shop (owners residence actually) or purchased anything. Maybe 4 years or so.

For the record, the TPI housing is very restrictive. I wouldn't consider it with anything more than a stock engine. Certainly not a 383. (That cut-up scoop with a large connecting hose is probably acceptable, though.)

Aside from the housing being restrictive (which it certainly is), if you go by K&N's filter area recommendations for sq.in. per horsepower, you'll fall short of being able to supply anything north of 350 cid that builds decent power. I posted as much years ago but the general reply was "my engine makes x hp on the dyno so the intake is fine" sort of reply. A little disappointing but that's often how these forums go.
Now if it were me, I'd modify the throat of the TPI housing (there's an excellent thread documenting the process) to a larger diameter and use the housing as an inlet only. I'd further the kit with a closed 14" filter case with a 14" x 3" (or 4") element. THAT would be the best CAI for these cars.

I used the somewhat-stock TPI setup on my car when it was running 11.60's. It had the "coffee can" mod and ram air tubes from the filters down to the fog light area. This was with the miniram. I modified it all to work with a carb for a while. Now I have a cowl hood with a base that seals to the cowl.
This was with an IROC and not a trans am. I am sure that makes a difference.
