1986 Trans Am- has a 350 from an old Bel Air.
Car had worked great up until I parked it for about 2 months with the front end elevated, as I was painting it.
When I finally put the car back together and on the ground I found that Overdrive was acting like fourth.
Explanation- From stop, putting it in OD and hit the gas, the engine revs, the car barely moves. Put it in any other forward or rearward gear, and it runs fine. Put it in drive, get it up to speed and put it in OD, and it shifts to fourth effectively.
My thought was maybe it had some crap bind up while sitting so I changed the fluid and filter...no change.
Any thoughts would help.

Check your tv cable adjustment? We sometimes bump, touch or otherwise move things out of position without knowing it.

It worked fine before, and I never touched it after so no idea how it could chose to go out of adjustment. Is that possible? Doesn't make sense...but I am certainly no mechanic. I need to replace it anyways, as the "self adjusting" ratchet doesn't work.

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable about automatic transmissions chimes in, but if your tv cable is no good, that could be it right there.

possibly shift cable loose at either the transmission bracket or shifter. your thread title is a little misleading as 4th is OD
