Rough Start, Runs odd and lost 3rd Gear
Hi folks,
So the other day I pulled my '91 Firebird Formula out of storage to get it ready for summer cruising and fun, however I've got a problem that I'm not real familiar with. I started the car up and it just idled absolutely awful (blew smoke, low rpm and general roughness) I waited a minute for it to settle down and it eventually did. and then I took it out to wash it up and get it clean and I noticed that 3rd gear only slips (auto) and occasionally it will run pretty odd while driving at lower speeds or when letting off the accelerator. I haven't noticed any real determent to power or anything but it's running really odd and is missing gears.
Any ideas?

Check and insure the transmission fluid is at the proper level. If not, make it so!

I've actually topped off the tranny fluid, it was a bit low but I'm still encountering the same issues.

how many miles are on the tranny? normally slipping means clutches are wearing down, but I could be wrong. Also are there any mods to it as well; shift kit, upgraded valve body, etc.. every little detail can help. And to possibly get rid of the rough idling, try resetting the computer to put it back in learn mode, drive it on the freeway for about 5 miles and the engine should have its parameters it likes to run at back.

It has an upgraded TBI system, non-stock fuel pump, open air filter, I think it may also have a lower temp thermo as well.

The 3-4 clutch pack seems it needs to be replaced, which will require bebuild kit. There are plenty of options on the rebuild kits. If you like to launch the car, I suggest going with red clutches (performance version) and performance kit pack, if not you can just get a regular rebuild kit. They will come with gaskets, steel plates, clutches, and band clamp as standard. However, if you do decide to go with the performance kit, I would suggest upgrading your sun shell as well. As far as the upgrades are concerned, I dont think the resetting will affect them.
