2 "bulb" fix questions

Hi all,
85 camaro sport vin h 305
putting final things on recently painted car and put on 1.) engine compartment light and new bulb- hooked up connector and ground behind bracket-did not go on, tried grounding elsewhere on hood-no luck
Q1 - where is this supposed to be grounded
Q2 - what turns on the engine comp light? or is it just permanently on with hood open or closed?

2.) I read all related "fasten seat belt light" posts - mine is always on when key is on- I disconnected connector to drivers seat belt under door sill and it still stays on?
Q1 - how do I get at the FSB light bulb to pull it out permanently without messing anything else up
thanks all
tom

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Hey Tom
The underhood light is triggered by the mercury switch

And for #2.....Illinois requires you to wear your seat belt...to each his or her own.
Anyway, just pull the cluster and remove the bulb. Just be careful.

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Thank you for the reply
1. where is this mercury switch and is a ground on the back of the bulb housing OK? could this switch be why it won't light up?

2. I do wear my belt but light stays on always
3. One other thing I remembered and just retested - a/c / heater fan works on 1st 2 speeds but not on Hi. replaced the relay and same thing old & new relay- any ideas on what could cause this? -the car has air cond but I haven't put it on yet cause I HATE the way it is mounted, but it's getting hot in chgoland

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

I thought the switch was incorporated in the bulb housing, ground to hood should be fine unless you have a fiberglass hood. Then you would need to run a ground to engine compartment.

Good for you on the seatbelt.

On the fan, replace the resistor pack...high speed is burnt out. Google it. Piece O cake to change and relatively cheap, 25 ish.

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Could try reaching under the dash and unplugging the "chime" box from the convenience center. That should turn out the light, IIRC...

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

I just replaced the blower motor resister, an odd looking item with 4 prongs for connector and 3 or 4 spring type things on the underside, mounts to a/c box on pass side of firewall. Prior to that I replaced a 4 prong relay that is also in that area on the pass side.

still have speed 1 & 2 works and turn to hi, it goes off. Any other possibilities??
Also, I don't have the A/C on the car and was wondering if that has anything to do with it. I've always wondered what the "MAX" setting on the heater/ a/c control does, and does this have anything to do with the HI setting for the blower fan?
thanks
tom

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Maybe your switch is bad? IDK

The MAX on the AC just controls the damper to close and re-circulate the air in the cabin. With NORM, some outside air is drawn in from outside. So, MAX will recirculate that fart instead of getting rid of it!!!

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Thanks Bob88,
your referring to the thing you turn on the heater control "box" in the console i assume. Is that a seperate item you can buy and install or part of the entire mechanism?
Also didn't mention it is a new blower motor and a couple of years ago when I 1st noticed this a mechanic friend of mine was there and took off the "relay", the box looking thing that slips onto a bracket on the firewall, and jumped a couple of wires on the connector and it worked on hi, then said it was the that relay, so I put a new one on then but did not fix problem.
thanks for your help!

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Thanks again for your help Bob88
I'll work on it -not a big issue now with 90 degree temp and no a/c on yet, but I'll reply eventually when I do fix the problem.

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

Light bulb just went on!!!
Check this connection right above distributor on the firewall. Its between mid and pass side of firewall. Its a Fan High Speed connector/fuse that is notorious to actually burn up. Check and repair it. I would bet a beer on it!

Re: 2 "bulb" fix questions

This is what I see. Cannot tell where the fuse might be? Also pls note the round odd shape rubber thing with a cut wire sticking out. This looks to connect to the engine compartment light which will likely solve that problem. What is that round thing, is it needed?, and how does it come apart so I can get a good splice? for the fun of it, here's a pic of my engine comp after all the mess of emissions is removed
thanks
