88 GTA Factory sub option with aftermarket head unit
So this 88 Im looking at has the small subs in the sail panels. Not sure Ill like them because then you have smaller main speakers in the sail panel due to space restriction.
Can you put an aftermarket head unit in these cars and still have the factory sub option working ?
If so whats involved above and beyond a standard head unit with 4 regular speakers and no factory subs ?
If its to big of a deal may just delete the factory subs and go back to 6x9s in the sail panel.
Thanks for any info.

If its working right. The UQ7 package is not that bad at all. Its kinda touchy, You have to play with the EQ ***** a bit to get that perfect sound. Better than the 6x9s IMO. If you are going to replace the Factory Head Unit, you might as well change the speakers too. The Sub system is ran on its own system. There is like this interconnect behind the head unit where the 4 4x6 speakers connect to along with the subs IIROC. Then it goes into the Radio itself. There is a amp behind the passengers side dash trim. Its not Powerful at all. IMO if I was you I would just get an AUX added to my head unit and use my phone for Music. I have this little amp for my phone that connects into the 3.5mm jack. I plug my headphone/ aux into that. Seems to help. I know they make boxes that Let you integrate OEM stuff with aftermarket Head units etc. I have one For when I get around to adding the Bose system to my car. I have the UQ7 now.

Ok so what you are saying is the aftermarket head unit would have no idea whether its connected to four regular speakers or this factory sub option because the wiring is totally separate from the head unit ?

No, you can do it but you will need to cut the wires. The way it works is that the Subs are connected to the amp. The amp goes to the Interconnect where the 4, 4x6 speakers go to as well. Then it goes into the radio. I am saying that its not worth getting a New head unit if your going to keep the oem speakers. Id just keep it. Its not a bad system.

Already got a couple of those aftermarket Pioneer units that fit the hole properly. Of course would change the speakers.....just have to decide to go with 6x9s in back or they smaller speakers with the subs ?

From what I understand the surrounds on the subs
can be replaced, Ive done this on home speakers.

Yes it very easy to do. As long as the cone and wires are good, replacing the surround is a cake walk. Just got to be sure to center the cone so it doesn't scrape the coil.
I use speakerworks for all my projects. I cannot remember if you need the 5in or the 5 1/4th

Re: 88 GTA Factory sub option with aftermarket head unit
Thanks for all your time. So in the back these subs and only a 4x6 ?
Still have the 4x6 in the dash I assume ?
I dunno. Have to listen to this one awhile but may just go 6x9.

Here is a tread that should help rebuild them. I did a step buy step on one I had laying around.
Also the rear 4x6s are not the same as the fronts. They have a different Ohm rating.
