Those gears don't generally strip all by themselves; usually they do that because what they're trying to turn, is stuck. Which would of course be the cable.

Might want to pull the speedo cable core out and lube it before it just tears up another gear.

Re: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working.

The Speedo cable core does turns freely. Although I did see like a spring coil twisted up on the input part of the Speedo cable that goes into the speedgear that got strip out. I also had a transmission rebuilt recently and was wondering if they install something wrong or was it normal wear and tear.

Thanks. I don't know what it was before but I will remove it again and try to get a tooth count.

Re: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working.

You can use a calculator based on the drive gear looks like a 17, tire size and rear men’s ratio.

Or use this chart

This first batch is for anyone using a 700R-4 with any of these tire

205/60R15
225/55R16

315/35R17

Re: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working.

Well just installed a new driven gear and test drove my car and speedometer and mileage was working again. Shortly after it stop working again. My question now is if my transmission has a shift kit or lockup converter can this cause the Driven gear to strip out?

Re: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working.

Did you pull the cable and lube with graphite ?

No. Failure to lube the cable would be the usual cause.

See my signature for a helpful mental technique that you can put to good use. You may rest assured, there are plenty of people with stock (lockout type) converters and shift kits, whose speedo cables don't bind and tear up speedo gears one after another.

Might want to pull the speedo cable core out and lube it before it just tears up another gear.
When you did this as previously advised would happen if you didn't do it and it happened anyway as predicted, what lube did you use?

Might want to also check your cruise regulator for binding, if you have that.

Re: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working.

I didn't lube the cable. I inspected the speedometer cable and it spins freely.

Re: Speedometer/Odometer Not Working.

Thanks Sofakingdom for the info. I'm going to buy a new cable and find out how to troubleshoot the Cruise Regulator.
