Re: 92 firefird 305 tbi

ticking could be anything mate, grab a stethoscope or shove a piece of hose in your ear and start listening around and see if you can at least narrow down where the ticking is coming from.

Re: 92 firefird 305 tbi

I kinda already did that without the tube or stethoscope, but ill try it again with a tube tomorrow. But it for sure sounds like its coming from the bottom near the oil pan. Almost sounds like it comes from inside the pan itself but i know that's a little ridiculous. Any suggestions from that??

Can't tell you with any degree of certainty what the ticking noise is, but I CAN TELL you FOR SURE, the extra quart of oil doesn't have anything to do with it at all.

I was wondering if oil foaming (due to overfill) would cause lifter tick. I guess you're thinking "no" on that.

Right: at one quart over, that would be a "no".

3 quarts, we could eeeek up to a maybe.

Overly enthusiastic test-driving somewhere along the line, even more maybe.

Sofa beat me to it word for word. Actually surprised it wasn't mentioned in the first response.

A stethoscope and a piece of hose are your friends for isolating noises. Determine whether it's coming from the top of the motor, bottom of the motor, front, back and etc.

Does it only make the noise on startup after sitting awhile? Only warm? Only cold? Have you tried starting the engine with the belt(s) off? Stuck the hose down through a valve cover grommet and etc?

Re: 92 firefird 305 tbi

Im havings troubles getting a video of it on here. Dont really know how. But the sound is almost always. Barely at idle in park. Louder as it drives. And is definitely worse when the engine hasnt warmed up yet. And it sounds to me like its back of engine, and closer to bottom. And have not yet done anything else but listened to it. Its just ticks away!

Re: 92 firefird 305 tbi

I was going to suggest exhaust gasket as well.

I've even heard a badly blown gasket where the bolts backed out make a sound resembling a locked up lifter roller dragging against a cam lobe, believe it or not.

Theoretically an exhaust leak SHOULD quiet down a bit after the engine warms up and everything expands (The leak "shrinks"), but that is not always the case.

Exhaust headers? Stock manifolds? Use the hose trick and run it around the header/manifold flanges. If it is an exhaust leak, you'll know immediately when you hit the right spot.

If you have aftermarket headers you have an even greater chance of the bolts backing themselves out.

Re: 92 firefird 305 tbi

Also another suggestion. On a cheap rebuilt 305 I once had, the shoddy lifters they used would bleed down and make a very prominent tapping noise on a cold start until the engine had been running for 60 seconds or so.

Re: 92 firefird 305 tbi

i replaced the exhaust manifold gasket on one side as it had a horrendous leak. Need to do the other side now, i have a leak but as she warms up it quietens down, doesnt disappear, but certainly dissipates.

my headers also push the bolts out

Stage 8 locking header bolts.
