Air Conditioning 1 can low - but which to add?
So my AC works but is a can low. Compressor kicks in for a bit but cycles too quickly. Gets cold a bit but could go a lot more.
What I don't know is what's in there. After all this time, my guess is R134- but its just a guess.
The system does not have any conversion fittings.
I have cans of R12 and R134.
Is one universal to both? I would like to avoid a full on evac and refill.
Which one would you add, if at all, not knowing what is in there?
I did a lot of looking on the interweb. Seems like everything else these days- two camps.

You cannot use 134 in an R12 system that as not been evacuated. If the fitting is still a thread style you have R12 and need to use up the R12 you have. If there is a quick connect style fitting, the system has been converted to R134 and you will have to use that. They made the fittings incompatible so you couldn't mess it up. Good luck!

Just see which fill/test port you have.
Attach a set of gauges and check.

Better off hitting a A/C shop if you have no experience.

Those little cans of R-12 are gettin pricey as well as the 20 pounders.
But still can be found.
Even if he still has the R12 system there are several b*stard gasses
they can use as a R-12 sub. Check fleabay.............
They sell in the little cans too.

Get a set of r-12 gauges and put in a pound or 2 to get yer a/c frosty!
My 84 came from NC. and the owner down there had the a/c changed
over to r-134. There are a couple foil conversion 134 alert
stickers under the hood.
It worked ok here in NY. I figure you would sweat to death down
south in the summer!

I had an '86 Dodge Omni (don't hate) that had working A/C, but it leaked pretty good. I kept it topper off with this, and it worked GREAT.
