Nice score! Deflate the spare ASAP and never depend on it. 30 years on, the folds in the sidewall are a liability.

BTW the CAST aluminum spare wont fit PBR discs. The black painted 15" aluminum spare fits the later rear discs.

Re: My junkyard find today ....

Ay dios mio! Might try inflating it a bit, and deflate slowly while applying pressure strategically, to encourage it to fold up in the right direction. I started inflating one of mine, years ago... Made it about to the first "pop" as a fold unfolded and it started to balloon off center. Since then, if I'm going very far I just toss a spare 16" tire in a hefty bag and toss it in the trunk. Figure if anything goes wonky, I can dial AAA get a tow, and have the spare tire mounted on the flat tire wheel.

Fourth gen spare should be a viable option too, but even those are a bit hard to come by now.

I need to find one of those longer wing nuts with the spacer. Got the shorter wing nut from a steel spare, but it's not long enough to fit the aluminum wheel. Finding all the bits to complete a spare tire/jack set is a REAL pain in the ***. Just when you think you've found the last piece, you figure out there's another missing.

I suppose the plastic spacer saddle for the spare was missing along with the CO2 can?

Re: My junkyard find today ....

no The plastic tray was there , I just didnt grab it, it was a long hot day, but this junkyard is cool , they have a old manual tire machine setup you can use to remove the tires from the rims so you are not buying junk tires,, and these where junk. They had an 05 date code..lol I just googled the spare and I see what you mean, its all ****ed up,,lol Ive never seen one in person so i didnt know the tire wasnt suppose to be like that.

Yeah they tend to get a bit wonky with age... Heck, they were wonky when they were a decade old. Give it a shot and you might get lucky. Inflate enough to open all the folds, treat the rubber with Armor All, or silicone (grease preferably, spray alternatively). Rubber should soften up a bit, and it'll be a bit more slippery. That might give you enough freedom to make it fold back up right. Tuck and roll.

Re: My junkyard find today ....

A full size 245/50ZR16 should fit in the hatch well, deflated, with the valve core removed. Tilt it all the way into the depression below the pulldown motor, and fish the spare tire anchor through the tire and the loop under the carpet. Drop the washer and wingnut on the anchor hook, and snug it down. When you close the hatch it should compress the tire enough to latch. At least that's how you're supposed to be able to haul the flat tire around. LOL

But in the real world, a hefty bag over the tire to keep the interior clean, and toss it wherever it'll fit.
